Could Mason be our Patterson?
What if Mason could do for us what Patterson has done for TCU?

He has nine games after the a** kicking from A&M to prove it.
Re: Could Mason be our Patterson?
Not very likely. Remember that Patterson was 40 when he took the job and was coordinator of the #1 defense in the country. Mason is pushing 60 and our defense currently resides in the 100s.

Mason would need to be our Franchione, not Patterson.
Patterson benefited from Franchione, who took over after Pat Sullivan's 1-10 season.
JJ left SMU in much the same shape.

I love Mason, but I hope he is our Ed Orgeron. Rights the ship, has a winning record, proves he is a good HC, but does not get the job. As unfair as that scenario would be to Mason, I think having the season play out like that and SMU going in another direction would be best for SMU Football. We need a fresh face or a coach with a lot of gravitas, no offense to Mason.

I agree with this and hope he gets a HC offer from another school as a result. If he gets us to a bowl game (I'm very much of the opinion he won't), he would be a COY candidate. Heck, even if we win 3-4 games, he deserves a HC offer somewhere. If we go 0-12, I wouldn't be mad at him as long as he continues to show the effort he's shown these past 2 weeks.

so we don't want a guy who wins with this team?

no; we want a guy who can bring in the kind of talent that can compete with B-12 teams

Agreed, this would be the best case scenario.
