D Real Estate Daily: SMU Football and Real EstateFrom today's D Magazine Real Estate Daily:
By Jon Altschuler King White, Jonas Woods, Ken Reimer, Jeff Carter, Ray Hunt, Anthony Bolner, John Hendricks. These are just a few of the Dallas real estate players I saw at Saturday’s football game between SMU and Texas A&M. (I’m not name-dropping, but rather putting enough real estate into this piece to make sure it qualifies for publication.) What I really want to discuss is what I would do now with SMU football if I were in charge of the athletic department. In short, I would diversify the booster base and otherwise enact a youth movement. Here are the specifics of my plan. I would start by tapping David Miller to lead the charge, asking him to do for football what he has already done for the basketball program. Next, challenge Bill Duvall to wear some red and blue in addition to his burnt orange. I imagine there’s a lot that this Texas booster could teach us, and we should ask him to do so on the basis that he would be helping his hometown by helping us. After that, I wouldn’t allow anyone over the age of 45 to touch the process. My sense it is time to give the university’s more recent graduates the opportunity to fix the football program. There’s tremendous horsepower in the post-death penalty classes that deserve the chance now to address shortcomings evident since they first arrived on campus. Going hand in hand with the youth movement, I would cap the age of my new head coach at 37. We need the energy and passion that traces to a young coach ready to swing for the fence at an early stage of his career. Ignore the risk of him enjoying success and leaving for a more established program. At this point, let’s just focus on getting successful. Pony up! Jon Altschuler is a partner at Altschuler and Co. Re: D Real Estate Daily: SMU Football and Real EstateWell written and the direction I would like the program to take!
Re: D Real Estate Daily: SMU Football and Real EstateYeah. Tap that base that was at SMU during the death penalty and throw out the ones that have kept it afloat for the past 30 years. I am all for bringing in youth, it needs to be done, but credibility kinds of gets lost when he picks a 64 year old to lead the charge for a youth movement. I will not ask David Miller to do any more than he wants because he has done so much already. If he wants to get involved more in football that is great but it should be his call. And I invite anyone of any age that wants to be a part to do so. I hope you kids that are screaming for the youth movement and want to throw out the older backers will put in your millions early so we can see how to do it.

Re: D Real Estate Daily: SMU Football and Real EstateNot a fan of this one. For SMU to take the next step there will need to be a unified step forward among all of the generations.

Re: D Real Estate Daily: SMU Football and Real Estatejust focus on the Model Miller had-get the Coach with the connections to hire the best recruiting staff possible by offering the best salary to young aggressive Coaches. Search for experience at the Coordinator positions. The other 6 guys are going to be hitting the road hard
"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.

Re: D Real Estate Daily: SMU Football and Real EstateDon't think he was trying to throw any of the 'old' folks off the bus. Just stating the obvious. Our football program needs to put the DP (horrible) & June (improved but mediocre) era's in the rear view mirror and really take this thing to the next level. We desperately need a smart, confident, passionate leader to move us forward and there a plenty of 'younger' coordinators on our candidate list that would fit the bill.
Re: D Real Estate Daily: SMU Football and Real EstateAll of this is ridiculous. Win. That is all. The rest is just bullsh*t.
Re: D Real Estate Daily: SMU Football and Real Estate
So since you are also not saying get an older coach etc, are you saying get a middle age 45ish coach etc? #HammerDown
Re: D Real Estate Daily: SMU Football and Real EstateHas nothing to do with the age of the coach. He is saying put together a new CofC of 45 and under. Good luck.

Re: D Real Estate Daily: SMU Football and Real EstateI don't know why we would ever shun the people that have kept SMU football alive for over 25 years.

Re: D Real Estate Daily: SMU Football and Real EstateAge has nothing to do with success.
Here is your 39 year old poster child. Lane Kiffin Tag Line: I am 39 Years Old and can screw a program up like I am 60 years old. Dude I hope you don;t run anything in real life. Talent has no age limit.
Re: D Real Estate Daily: SMU Football and Real EstateArbitrary age cap on paid position = lawsuit. Otherwise, as an old guy, I don't disagree although you must admit that the alums in the 40 and under age bracket didnt exactly fill up the student section during all of those terrible years. Is there that much interest in that age group? They certainly didnt attend SMU to see big time football. And btw, as a whole they don't yet have the deep pockets of my crowd.
Re: D Real Estate Daily: SMU Football and Real EstateI actually have zero depth to my pockets. They are turned inside out.
I vote for any coach that can turn the program around. Look at Duke (4-0) (yes I know who they've played, but at this point a W is a W.)
Re: D Real Estate Daily: SMU Football and Real Estate
They were all at the game to discuss what the cost of the empty lot at Bishop and Binkley might be, and how much to leverage. Were was a Crow family member ? And Sherwood ? Smustatesman aka NUKE......I procreate and I vote.
