Mack?

Postby Topper » Thu Sep 25, 2014 2:58 pm

I will preface by saying that I have no idea if Mack Brown might be a candidate for HC, and that if he is I am agin' it. Having said that, the local media down here in Austin is buying into the story that Mack left things in such disarray that it is going to be a 5 year re-building job for Charlie Strong.

Does anyone believe this? I have listened to one local media (Austin) report after another for years extolling one 5 star commitment after another year after year. I cannot believe that Mack left the cupboard so bare. If he did, then he is certainly not the guy for our job.

No it fell apart but no Coach will get 5 years to rebuild Texas so by definition it isn't. With the right Coach it should be a 2 year rebuild and then at least 9-10 wins. Story out today that he has conducted twice as many drug tests than in any previous years. Obviously, he is trying to root out some guys that failed.

Even with that "mess" (we should be so lucky) - when they get their tackles back they will be better than everyone but OU and Baylor, and maybe OSU.

I don't know, I just can't see this happening, even a courtesy interview. The money it would take to sign MB would be FAR better spent on a young, hungry up-and-coming coach.

Whether Mack would be great or a bust depends on why he would take the job. In my opinion there is no better salesman in college football and that is what we need. So if he wants to prove to UT they were wrong to fire him then I think he would be great. On the other hand if he just wanted to pad his retirement then he would be a bust. The advantages of an energetic and enthusiastic Mack are obvious. Immediate credibility from all constituencies. Recruits, high school coaches, media, alums, P5 conferences, playoff committee, money sources, TV executives, etc. all would elevate their opinion of SMU football and kill the "SMU is a bad job crowd". Then following through wit wins would verify his decision to take the job. On the other hand, if he only wants the money then it could be June all over again.

One of the reasons Mack was such a great recruiter was that he had a Longhorn on his shirt.

A fair analysis is that Mack has been a great recruiter everywhere he is been-but he might be reaching his expiration date on that-I kind of hope we can get a great mastermind offensive coach that can unite the alumni and fans. A little bit of attitude and confidence. That being said if it turned out to be Mack I think he would be by far the best Coaching hire at SMU since the DP including Gregg, Rossley, Cavan, Bennett and Tiki God. Its not even close.

Mack Brown won at freaking Tulane and UNC. Hell he took UNC into the Top 10 while he was there. Things went sour the last few years at Texas but I agree that if we were lucky enough to land Mack Brown he'd be the best coach we've had post DP by a mile.

The other reasons he was a great recruiter were:
1) Effort - Mack and his staff worked hard. Nobody ever doubted that.
2) Mack loves recruiting. While a cattle prod couldn't get June to make a home visit, I doubt that a shock collar could keep Mack from networking and recruiting - year round.
3) Mack is a born salesman. As a UT alum, I can tell you that things weren't great on the 40 acres before he arrived. McWilliams - Bust. Mackovic - Bust. Mack built the program, rebuilt the stadium, and filled the stadium.

If he wants the job (Much like Larry Brown wanted the basketball job), he could be very effective at building the program and selling the Mustangs to the Dallas area.

All good points on Mack Digetydog.

The main issue I would want to make clear to Mack is that this isn't a job that has the sort of built-in cache of Texas. Half the battle here will be to rejuvenate the fan base and the casual college football fan in Dallas that has no affiliation with SMU to engage with our program. We need a leader both for the team and our fans. The recruiting thing will take care of itself as Mack has a proven track record of being an elite recruiter with a network of coaches that could do wonders at our program. I would just want to make sure Mack was comfortable with the behind the scenes activities that June seemed to have little to no interest in doing. If he was then we would be incredibly fortunate to have him here at SMU.
