suffice it to say that SMU's next coach has a very challenging task ahead; will have to heal a lot of wounds as he rebuilds this program. I sincerely hope the SMU community will someday support the football program and pack Ford no matter who we are playing

This is true. It's a huge task.

However, there is one TREMENDOUS advantage. There's a roadmap already drawn that is proven to work, and the man who drew it is only a few offices down, and (I suspect) is more than willing to answer questions and help however he can. Follow the basketball model.

1. Hire a top flight staff.
2. Recruit. Recruit locally. Build relationships with local high school coaches. As a stopgap measure, prioritize JUCO and transfers.
3. Engage with the University community. Don't wall your players off.
4. Engage with the Dallas community.
5. Play an exciting brand of ball.

Those steps are in order. The community has shown that it will engage if welcomed. The winning will take care of itself. The unrest we're seeing among some ex-players is a direct result of not doing steps 1-3.

But it was JJ not SMU that offered them the scholarship. That is why they are more loyal to the coach than the school. Another coach could have come in and pulled the scholarship.

Since Beasley doesn't need an SMU degree (which he doesn't), why did he accept the scholarship. No one forced him to accept it. He could have gone to UNT and earned an education degree. If he wanted to continue playing, he could have walked on. He doesn't seem to be very mentally stable. I don't think I'd want him coaching my kids.
