Garcia Named Offensive Player, Cichero Named Rookie
Sept. 29, 2014
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (American/SMU) – SMU men’s soccer players Stanton Garcia and Mauro Cichero were selected as all-league performers for their contributions to the Mustangs’ 4-2 conference opening victory over Tulsa last week, American Athletic Conference officials announced on Monday.
Garcia, a sophomore from McKinney, Texas, was named the league offensive player of the week after scoring the match-tying goal and assisting on the final tally of the game. The goal was Garcia’s third of the season, and he leads all Mustangs in that department. Garcia registered three shots in the match, including a game-high two on goal.
The match winner came from Norman, Oklahoma, native Cichero in the 58th minute to secure the victory. Cichero got on the end of a long ball from freshman Jared Rice for his first career goal.
The Ponies are now 4-3 overall in 2014 and with the win over Tulsa, who is receiving votes in the NSCAA Top 25 Coaches Poll, they start the conference season at 1-0.
Garcia, Cichero and the Mustangs are back in action on Wednesday when they step out of conference play to host Northern Illinois at Westcott Field. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. CT with live stats and video available at SMUMustangs.com.
