I'm pretty sure Mack can con some lower-tier P5 school into hiring him.

I hate to break this-but there have been a bunch of great Head Coaches who were managers not play callers.

BTW along that line I had a discussion with a Baylor alum over the weekend about Philip Montgomery. He said that he doesn't think Art Briles calls plays because he doesn't wear headsets. Is that right? Who does call plays for Baylor. I understand its reputed to be a simple playbook.

Actually I think both SMU and Texas are the only schools to claim a National Championship in Football in the last 40 years

In the time he was at UT, he helped them rake in almost 1 BILLION dollars in revenue, and that was just from football. Taking a job at SMU would be kin to a CEO of a large corporation accepting a job as manager of a local Kwik-E-Mart.

I think the bigger question is would Mack really want this job? I'm not debating if this is a good or bad job but after a few weeks in the studio Mack may see a much easier road to retirement. Or maybe he's like LB and can't stand to be away from the game. What do you think ESPN pays him, a million for the season? For him to be seriously interested I bet we would have to double that - 2 or 2.5 million a year and a nice budget for his staff. I wouldn't be surprised if Hart has already talked with him. I believe he still lives in Austin.

I'd like to see a Venn Diagram of people who are anti-mack brown with people who were anti-Larry Brown

Its the same reason a coach like Larry Coker, who won a national title and reached the pinnacle of college coaching in America, went to a program like UTSA in his twilight years. HE'S A FOOTBALL COACH. That's what these guys do. For Mack, maybe he misses going into living rooms with prospects and being able to get that kid to commit. Maybe he's tired of just going through the motions on TV. Its in their blood. Some of these guys are only truly happy when they are working. Plus, the stress level of coaching a program like UT and then going to SMU is well.....not that stressful really.

And is Mack interested? His name has been linked to the SMU job now for a few weeks and there has been no statement of disinterest from Mack. All it would take to quell this would be a statement saying "I'm flattered by the interest from SMU but I'm happily retired from coaching and enjoying my role as an analyst." If Mack or his people aren't interested then they certainly are not acting like it....yet.

My initial knee-jerk reaction to Brown was hell no. BUT, if he could lure the likes of Montgomery, Spavital, Beatty, or Riley as the OC and 'coach in waiting' I wouldn't be opposed. With his age, only think Brown is good for 2-3 years before he gets complacent and is ready to retire for good.

Because of his contacts it could actually be the perfect scenario if we gave him the resources to put together a complete, top notch team of go-getters.

The Coach in Waiting (CIW) thing is dead now because a CIW is considered a Head Coach under NCAA rules and is severely restricted in recruiting

One thing is for sure, Mack is the ultimate recruiting closer. Look at this quote from DeSoto's HC in an ESPN article last year:

"You can't say no to Coach Brown," DeSoto (Texas) High School coach Claude Mathis said. "He does a great job once you get the kids on campus and in the office."

Here's the article. Good read..

The best I could say for a possible Mack hire is he could potentially help turn around the recruiting the way Sherman did for A&M post Fran wrecking Texas HS connections.
