How did Mack end at Texas? With discipline problems and teams that did not fulfill their potential. Mack gained a reputation among high school coaches and recruits as a coach who could not take a talented HS players and tune them into NFL-caliber talent. Mack couldn't do a durn thing with the bluechips he recruited and saw his own stock drop.

Mack Brown? No, thank you.

Assuming he couldn't "coach his way out of a paper-sack"-focus on the qualities that made him such a successful NCAA coach. Those are the type of qualities that SMU needs to at least consider

Do not underestimate the power of payoffs in boosting Switzer's win/loss record at OU. The guy was about the dirtiest operators in the history of the college game, and that's saying something.

And Larry Coker flamed out at Miami and Fran stunk it up at A&M. Both programs are, embarrassingly, light years ahead of ours at this point. No coach that is coming here won't be doing so without some warts or serious flaws. Mack is no different. When I look at what can get us competitive as fast as possible the best way is to get someone here that can drastically elevate the talent level. Mack Brown can do that. Coaching situations are not linear. Yes it ended poorly at Texas but for the first 13 years I'd say he did an absolutely incredible job.

Exactly.

Plus, he drove the Aggies out of the Big 12 with 12 wins v. 4 losses.

I think what he meant was that Mac Brown is to UT what Barrie Switzer is to the Cowboys.

Mack Brown was to UT what Jimmy Johnson was to the Cowboys.

He rebuilt the brand that had fallen on hard times.

I agree with you that any experienced head coach taking the SMU job will have warts and flaws, but Brown's warts and flaws are overwhelming. I think we can find a better retread than Mack Brown.

There is no current head coach or former head coach that has the kind of upside for SMU that a pissed off and rejuvenated Mack Brown does. We would be over the moon lucky to have him here. Hope he's genuinely interested.

I prefer a Montgomery or Morris to Mack or an older coach (partly because I fear of having a HC come in here just to cash his $2mm retirement checks like JJ did) but honest can't say I would be opposed to the idea of interviewing him and having him communicate his strategy. If he comes in here with a similar energy to HOF LB and puts in place a strong recruiting staff and good OCs, then he would place us a path to be successful with immediate credibility. Of course, the downside is that those cynics will continue to doubt about our sustainability after he would leave.

Rayburn- with all due respect- Barry was no dirtier than Freddie Akers, Jackie Sherrill and Jimmy Johnson. He just competed with what the going market rate was.

IMO- Mack might be an ok hire. My big concern would be recruiting. At whorensville I doubt if he had to recruit very hard. I can't imagine a top hs player not wanting to go to austin. His job to sell SMU would be significantly more difficult.

No way, Switzer was a special kind of dirty and far more corrupt than any of the guys you mentioned, far more.

Sometimes our fan base seems so out of touch with reality. An okay hire, really? And your concern would be recruiting? Again, wow.

Talk to any high school coach that has coached in Texas over the last 15 years and they will tell you, to a man, that Mack Brown was incredibly active and involved in recruiting. I have a friend that is currently an assistant at Mesquite Poteet and he told me of an interfacing he had with Mack back in 2009. Texas was still killing it on the trail and Mack was riding high, but at a coaches convention speaking engagement Coach Brown took the time to shake every coach's hand and at least spend 2-3 minutes talking with them and letting them know how much he appreciated what they did for football in the state of Texas. My buddy went to the same clinic a few years later and was blown away that not only Mack remembered his name but remembered the nature of their previous conversation. Said it was unbelievable and that it wasn't isolated. He literally did that with every coach, regardless of the size of the school or the level of coach. That sticks with people. If Mack could just do that for us here around Dallas we will be an immediate player on the recruiting trail.
