Re: Questions from a Hawaii fanTwo totally different situations. He came here only to collect the big bucks- he had no love or interest in our school and it's students, alumni, nor the community in general. He has a love for the islands but doubt if he will recruit or produce a winning program. He had an antiquated system that he refuses to change and it is no longer competitive with today's defenses etc.
Re: Questions from a Hawaii fant
While I may be nitpicking, however, I will say your comment about supporting the community is outright b.s. I have no idea of JJ's intentions about coming to SMU, nor the alumni/students. However, I can name several fundraising events in Dallas where he went as JJ, and not as "SMU Head Coach", to push forward his agenda of helping homeless children. In fact, that seems to be a resounding theme for most of his efforts. And no, before you ask, I haven't seen his movie...
Re: Questions from a Hawaii fanHe is the worst and least loyal representative of his university in the Country. I've seen cheaaters, immoral and unethical coaches but I've never seen a coach with such disdain for the university that pays his check. Typical that he quit so he can protect his reputation and not have to watch each one of these blowouts

"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: Questions from a Hawaii fanWith the changes to policy related to athletics a typical $750k middling coach could have matched his achievements without ruining it in the end
"I think Couchem is right."

Re: Questions from a Hawaii fan
He only promoted his 'causes'. How many times did you hear or read of him interacting with the Dallas community to build better relations with our school? IMO he never met with any of the major 'movers and shakers' of Dallas to promote us. The only thing he was doing is asking for money for his 'causes'. Big difference.
Re: Questions from a Hawaii fanYes, simply for the fact he took the job when nobody with skins on the wall would touch it - and now the candidate pool appears to be potentially impressive for the next hire.
Did he stay too long? Definitely. Could SMU have done anything differently? Probably not. Shake It Off Moody
Re: Questions from a Hawaii fan
It's hard to argue against anything in this post. SMU-12 NCAA appearances, 1 Final Four
2014-15 & 2016-17 AAC Men's Basketball Champs
Re: Questions from a Hawaii fanHe'll no. He showed his disdain for SMU and he is probably laughing at us now. Hard to imagine any smu fan not having any disdain for him.
We finally got serious about having a real coach when we brought him and while the results were positive during the first three years he destroyed everything positive he did and in fact less us with a worst football team than when he started. $14mm later and we're worse off. Wow
Re: Questions from a Hawaii fanWithout offering an answer to the initial question, the idea that June somehow took the Job when nobody else would is tenuous at best. Neuheisel and Johnson slow played to get better jobs, but slick Rick would have absolutely taken the job. And he was the favorite for certain boosters. This was a somewhat attractive job with a large salary and low expectations seven years ago. Numerous people threw their hat in the ring. We waited on, and signed June. But there were others, ready and willing. Would they have turned out any different? No idea. But June did have gravitas at the time. Shame he couldn't parlay that into hiring a real staff here.
Re: Questions from a Hawaii fan
True. Using the term "nobody" is a bit strong. It was still widely considered a coach-killer job at the time, and I think (at least I hope) that is no longer the case. Shake It Off Moody
Re: Questions from a Hawaii fanAbsolutely yes. And I still can't figure out why we didn't can him after ASU.
I’m coming home
I’m coming home Tell the World I’m coming home
Re: Questions from a Hawaii fanMy post didn't work.
Anyway, I never wanted JJ. That should answer all your questions.
Re: Questions from a Hawaii fan
So much truth here. Whatever good things Jones did are more than outshadowed by how he left. No SMU fan should be even remotely thankful he came here at this point.
Re: Questions from a Hawaii fanWarbow, if I remember correctly you basically predicted this would be a disaster back in 2007/08 and we all laughed you off.
I'll be the first to say....we should have paid a little more attention to the issues at that time. You called it.
