Yes he was right to be shocked just as we were all right to be shocked when June's team lost 4 of 5 after they supposedly "turned a big corner". Not exactly the way to win over all those fans who stayed away.

it will be interesting to see if we can average 15,000 at home in AAC home games over the first-let's say 4 years of the league. I'm going to guess No. Nobody wants to really talk about the real SMU fan attendance at our games. Baylor, Tech, TCU and A&M just make it look acceptable

No way we will. Interest will be rock bottom against opponents no one cares about, with a lame-duck coaching staff and a winless team.

Smu students are too cool to care about smu football.

Basketball hadn't really had sustained success since the 80's, and then LB enters the picture with a young and hungry coaching staff. Goes through 1 year of growing pains while waiting on quality transfers to arrive. He signs high major prospects away from some powerhouse type schools, and we are off and running.

Football isn't that easy. But man it would be great to get it there.

Arena of 7k vs stadium of 35k.

big difference. but possible.

Another interesting thing to watch-SMU basketball attendance in November and December against weak competition.

The problem is not the boulevard. It is a wonderful gameday event that happens and is not affected by whether the team wins or loses. The problem is there are not enough fans who want to be in the stadium watching a football game and/or watching the Mustangs on tv. SMU needs to change their marketing from a school for rich kids and snobs with many students from other states and countries who aren't passionate about football to one that is the college team for the Dallas area with a welcome sign for all and a family atmosphere.

great post.

it was that way when I was in school in the 90's - watching games at the Cotton Bowl, even before the boulevard. The State Fair was basically our boulevard.

Arguably that's the only way we make it to the P5-but it will cost a lot of money and I'd put the chances that it pays off at 10% or no more than 20%. I would say lower but I actually witnessed Mustang Mania actually take Dallas by the lapels and make Dallas pay attention to SMU and college football whether they realized they wanted to or not

I think basketball will greatly help things. I think the problem is that as long I have been around smu (not long compared to most of you other guys) school spirit for smu has been very "uncool". Maybe if basketball can generate some school spirit, it will pour over to football

So you wouldn't go with the slogan "not your average soirée"?

Unfortunately, smu and many of the alumni embrace the snobbish attitude which will always hold us back (and is just embarrassing in general).

The school is finally making some strides in the right direction, I just hope that this 0-12 season doesn't kill the momentum.

1). I thought the Pep rally was a cool idea and it actually got some people involved and excited.

2). I think basketball is getting people more interested in our sports in general. The last two games (granted they were TAMU and TCU) we had the most students that I've ever seen at a game before.

I really do think that Hart is doing the right things. People say that basketball gets filled up by the same 5,000 fans that go to football. On some level I agree. However, I have multiple family and friends in the city that went to Auburn/UT/Tech/etc. They have turned down my offers for free football tickets but once the basketball team got good they started coming to games. It's not just the same fans.

We need an exciting product on the football field. Nobody wants to watch us get killed by 50 points. You can't expect people who didn't go to SMU watch that when I don't even want to go.

Make a good hire and hopefully have a few 9-10 win seasons. Our out of conference schedule isn't as difficult going forward. Let's see what attendance looks like after that. But it won't happen overnight. June Jones should have known that and not let one game (UCF) derail the progress we were making.

Really, well how did the USF staff sign 20 prospects with BCS offers last year with the low attendance they had? Could it be because when Taggert first got there they worked hard in the area recruiting and that started with the head coach?

In the words of the late Al Davis it's all about "just win baby" and everything will take care of itself. And again, by win, I mean convincingly and against worthy opponents (See SMU Basketball 2013-14). And no one cares about going undefeated in the AAC. Oh, and the players can't look high school in terms of size.

So, it has nothing to do with SMU students being spoiled, or not interested in SMU Football. That's a lame excuse. They didn't look uninterested or spoiled when they were camping out for basketball tickets.

And as far as winning, I don't see how a Mack Brown caliber splash, or hungry young guy begging players to commit to SMU is going to do it. Hence, the only options I see that while difficult would be the only realistic way to save SMU Football are as follows : 1. increase the enrollment/lower the tuition. or 2. Hire a Coach that is not a splash by rather a tidal wave (Gruden, Belichick, Payton, etc..), 3. Hire a talented former NFL recruiting staff that are proven player evaluators that can go after the right unknown guys without the P-5 offers + hire talented X&O's coach, or 4. File Suit against P-5 and force College football to become socialist like the NFL...

Division III, here we come....

Baylor and TCU give their students premium seats, free gear, flags to unfurl, they run on the field...and an exciting product on the field that is at least regionally relevant. We get 33% of our entire school in the stands and they receive NONE of those benefits. And SMU doesn't want to do those things! Lay off the fans, lay off the students, abandonment by Dallas and small-time thinking by the school hinder us immensely. 100% student unity isn't saving our attendance; expect marginal returns pumping our exhausted/moved-on alumni to buy into this crap. Win with what you got, you aren't entitled to anything.
