Phillips #2

Postby Nacho » Tue Oct 04, 2005 9:02 am

According to the DMN Phillips has been moved to the #2 spot behind Romo.

Hopefull Chris will get some PT this week.

I guess this signals the end of his exile/punishment/whatever it was.

Well he lost his job to an injury he suffered, I guess it's only fair he gets back in the rotation by an injury to Eckert. Maybe this will keep him from transferring, but who knows....

I just wonder if they will even consider putting Phillips in if Romo struggles. They have been so reluctant to give him a shot that it would surprise me. I expect to see Romo through the end of the season at this point. However, I would like to get a good look at Phillips in a game going into next season.

Though I would hate to see us drop the next two games, I hope that if it does happen we might put Phillips in after ECU.

SMU is 0-33 since 2001 when scoring less than 20 ppg.
We are averaging 15 ppg this season.
Our opponents have averaged 30 ppg.

Doesn't look good for us this weekend. Maybe Phillips will get some mop up time.

If nothing else, now both QBs are lefties who can run, so presumably we'd run the same plays with each, right?

That's the problem.

Why do some of you keep saying that Romo can run...and that he is faster than Phillips?? I'm not saying that he's slow or immobile, but it is a stretch to say that he is a mobile QB. He's got 59 rushes for 112 yards...that's 1.9 yards per carry. Lookout Vince Young. I know the offensive line has been suspect, but come on.

he is pretty fast-probably faster than Phillips but not near as mobile or hard to bring down. Phillips is a horse to bring down-seriously he rarely goes down on the first attempted tackle especially in the open field.

Here are our stats for the season. I readily admit that they aren't very pretty but Romo's numbers aren't that bad. Massey has a decent average. Where oh where is Givens? I don't see a single reception and we have used up his red-shirt. He needs to be playing. It's not like we are going to lose the NC if we don't win out.

Looked up Phillips stats in his five starts as a true freshman:
Rushing - 65 rushes 246 yards 3.9 yard average long – 34 yards 1 TD
Passing – 35 of 65 53.8% 389 yards 2 TD 2 INTs

Romo in 5 games as a senior this year:
Rushing – 59 rushes 112 yards 1.9 yard average long – 21 yards 1 TD
Passing – 46 of 93 49.5% 562 yards 3 TD 1 INTs

Rushing yards are deceiving for QBs since their sacks count against them. If Romo and Phillips were playing RB then a head to head rushing stat would be more meaingful.

I would like to see both play. Phillips might be the starter next year. He needs the PT. If a new coaching staff comes in the heir apparent might not be Willis. It could be an interesting battle between Willis and Phillips or one of the other QBs.

I agree with Stallion here. I think Romo's a step quicker than Phillips, but Phillips is bigger, stronger, more elusive and harder to tackle.

And I think that the reports that Phillips is somehow in Coach Bennett's doghouse are inaccurate. No doghouse resident would have doused Coach Bennett with the ice after the TCU win.

It looks to me like Romo is fairly beat up. He is not as quick or as fast as he was earlier in the season. It looks like he trying to stay in the pocket (ok what there is of one) longer now than earlier in the year, thus getting sacked. I like Romo but I am looking forward to Phillips playing.

Now for the completion of this exercise, the DBs:

Fr--8
soph--3
jr--6
sr--2 but these are 2 starters, Harper and Humphrey. They will be hard to replace

So overall we look to be pretty thin at LB. Counting on red-shirt freshmen is not what I like to see. We have to replace half of the starting secondary so that is worrisome. That's college football--you only get 4 years to play and then they boot you out.

Possibly.. but coming in reportedly out of shape.. doesn't help. Also a rotator cuff injury and surgery to repair it doesn't help. If you think about it.. why risk playing him if you don't have to when he could re-aggravate it? I'm sure it's sore on him still.. even with good rehab. You bang his arm up and you're left with Justin Willis and Eric Johnson next year.. that's it.

That being said.. I'm a fan of Phillips and hope, if he's healthy, we see him sooner than later.
What we obtain too cheap.. we esteem too lightly. It is persistence alone that gives everything its value.
