The problem is not the boulevard. It is a wonderful gameday event that happens and is not affected by whether the team wins or loses. The problem is there are not enough fans who want to be in the stadium watching a football game and/or watching the Mustangs on tv. SMU needs to change their marketing from a school for rich kids and snobs with many students from other states and countries who aren't passionate about football to one that is the college team for the Dallas area with a welcome sign for all and a family atmosphere.

It wouldn't hurt if Freshman Orientation was more directed towards developing school spirit and encouraging participation in athletics events. And yes...give the students better seats at the football games and stick the visiting team fans in the corners like they do at TCU and most other colleges.

absolutely true; bottom line is that those of us who dwell on this board are exceptions to the "general student population" at SMU that just couldn't care less about SMU athletics. I was one of the 1500 when I lived in Dallas but even in the Pony Express days of top 10 caliber football, I couldn't get classmates out to many games at Texas Stadium and very seldom were my friends up for road trips. Basketball was easier when we reached top 10 status, but even then our "fans" only came out for premium games. The 1500 watched those non-conference games against Podunk U. at Moody with maybe another 500-1,000 curiosity seekers in those years. Unless SMU can become Dallas' university and earn community support, we just don't deserve a spot alongside the big boys in today's world of college athletics

Move the student section behind the visiting bench like TCU does and move the visitors to the upper endzone seats noone wants. Give the students flags and gear so they can cheer and have fun. Mob 2.0.

It's a blessing and a curse. I'm "die hard" enough to frequent this haunt as much as I do, and watch every single game, even this year. But lately, when I can make it to Dallas, there's a real struggle to leave the Boulevard and head in to Ford. Call it weakness or just being a spineless drunk, but staying out and enjoying great food, a ton of brews, and the company of friends and brothers is a helluva lot more appealing than watching us a) get drilled by a quality opponent or b) drill some 1-AA or directional school in a half empty stadium.

A huge part of the problem, if you want to call it that, is that half of the students are not even from the enormous state of Texas. What, like 20% are even from the area and stay here? Small school, snobbish and therefore exclusive of the t-shirt fan, and 80% are not even locals? Sounds like, well, what we have. Not conducive to huge crowds.

But advertising helps, as does the Boulevard. Like Stallion, I'm not advocating quitting. But recognize the core factors at work.

And when they brought you into that pep rally in 1955, they said "and last year in 1954 we beat the following P-5 teams: Texas A&M, Arkansas, Kansas, TCU, Missouri, and lost to Notre Dame by only touchdown."............After hearing that, your darn right I'd be in my seat for the 55' season.

I love the tail wagging the dog philosophy some of you guys live by. Let's focus on Texas only or dallas mostly students so we can [maybe] increase football attendance. Nevermimd the purpose of a university is to try to bring the best and most diverse pool of students and perspectives for the betterment of everyone, including your own value of your diploma. It's amazing how some think football should drive our student demographics. Football as well as any other sport should complement not drive the college experience.

If you want to increase butts in the seats we need to get a real football program that can actually compete with some of the big boys. And to say it's partly bc of international student presence get [deleted] real.

What's more diverse than opening the flood gates to all socio-economic diversity that DALLAS has to offer? Dallas is clearly an International City with much diversity to offer. Why the need to go to China to find a student when there are already Chinese students in Dallas who grew up in Shanghei? And let me tell you, the kids in Memphis are just incredible diverse and different from those in Birmingham...Invest in the Dallas kid and ye shall be rewarded..

If you want just dallas kids let me suggest a community college in Dallas. Or try utd if you really want to diversify Dallas more.
