So, for those bashing CB, if a winning team and a good opponent are required for SMU to have a good attendance, why were there so many empty seats at the 2012 A&M game?

because we were charging the aggies a bit too much.

all the SMU folks came out for that game. The only ting empty were the overpriced endzone bleachers.

Probably because they were charging $90 to sit in the bleachers in the south endzone?

It wasn't just endzones that were empty. There were quite a few seats all around the stadium that were unoccupied.

A lot of people checked out after that "winning team" lost by 35 to Baylor to open the season. Not exactly the way to win new fans.

So sorry Cole. I was going to come out to watch you play against a traditional SWC rival from the SEC but it was just too hot to come out from the shade of the Boulevard. :D

So a loss to a team with one of the most prolific offenses in the country is enough to make the average fan ignore that SMU had just been to a third straight bowl? That's all it takes to say "Ahh screw it I don't need to see one of the few name teams that comes through here"?

I can go back to 1968 and forward and attest SMU has never had great fan support. We have always depended on the opposition to fill the seats. When we were at our best in the early and mid '80s, more Dallas area support would come out and we could have 50-60% SMU support. When we had mediocre or worse seasons the stadium would have majority opposition in the stands. Been that way for a long, long time.

Aggie would have filled Ford 2 years ago with $60 tickets. $90 was too high with them coming back to play the piggies in Jerry's house the next week. And we were not good enough to draw the rest from the Dallas area. This has been discussed forever. We just do not draw well. But if we can win some games, and more importantly play some locally relevant teams, we can fill Ford. We just need to win to gain the home field advantage.

Our current support is garbage, yes, but the purpose of a football team is not to sell tickets.

Yes, especially when the team was completely non-competitive. A couple of mediocre bowls (one of which we lost on our own homefield) wasn't ever going to move the needle for our fans or people in Dallas. I didn't like it but I did understand why many people thought "same ol SMU ". It's kind of hard to build brand loyalty when blowout losses to legit competition are a frequent occurrence.

Exactly .500,7-7, for the Armed Forces Bowl year.

Also, until SMU can prove that it can compete with a Big XII team, a lot of SMU fans are not going to give the team the benefit of the doubt. Again, I'm a season ticket holder and find it difficult to watch us get blown out time and time again to one of those schools. I was at that TAMU game, there were some empty seats but not as many as you are implying. There also wouldn't have been had we not tried the bleacher idea.
