Do the Dallas media want SMU to succeed?Taking a cue from the D magazine post today plus all of the media coverage of the June Firing/Eric Dickerson negativity/this dumpster fire of a season, it makes me wonder if the local media really wants to see SMU athletics succeed. It seems they would rather devote their attention and resources to the bigger schools - from a purely business perspective, they are right to do so - and continue to ignore SMU. They seem to enjoy perpetuating SMU as the rich kid, big money, country club school that is a punch line for sports.
Granted this is one of the many stereotypes about SMU that Larry Brown and crew blew apart earlier this year, but we still have a long way to go. It would be nice if someone in the local media would write about the potential benefit to Dallas if SMU had a top 25 football team.
Re: Do the Dallas media want SMU to succeed?SMU under Brown last year-deserved every bit of praise
SMU under Jones this year-deserves every bit of criticism move on "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: Do the Dallas media want SMU to succeed?i haven't taken he dmn in several years so i have no idea what they are saying nor do i care.
Re: Do the Dallas media want SMU to succeed?I have chatted with Bill Nichols at the DMN and he loves the school. He just has to report the facts.
Re: Do the Dallas media want SMU to succeed?
Fair enough.
Re: Do the Dallas media want SMU to succeed? As it was rumored to have been Tweeted; was Thomas Eric Duncan really going to enroll in our SMU-in-Liberia Program next semester ?
Smustatesman aka NUKE......I procreate and I vote.
Re: Do the Dallas media want SMU to succeed? All the Dallas media wants is a story they can sell, regardless of whether its good or bad. SMU writes the story, and the media tells it. Period. That's the way its always been. The DP did not result from some vendetta by the Dallas media against SMU. It resulted from a juicy, juicy story that SMU wrote over many years. . .and the Dallas media was only too happy to dig it up and tell b/c people wanted to hear it. Likewise, the Larry Brown/SMU story last year was re-told with great enthusiasm by the local press. . .because it was a great underdog/rags to riches story and people loved it. The current football shit-show is morbidly fascinating when you consider the historically-bad stats this team has put up on both sides of the ball. That's a story that's also going to get told.
if it sells, they'll write it. . .good or bad.
Re: Do the Dallas media want SMU to succeed?
Not sure Larry Brown blew apart the stereotypes of SMU as the rich kid, big money, country club school? His success has everything to do with his name, resume, and recruiting acumen, and very little to do with SMU. Perfect storm that SMU fans should enjoy while he's on campus. Could fade away just as quickly once he retires.
Re: Do the Dallas media want SMU to succeed?
Let's hope he's here for at least a few more years.
Re: Do the Dallas media want SMU to succeed?
Exactly. The media wants to sell papers and drive TV ratings. That's it.
Re: Do the Dallas media want SMU to succeed?they might write/ tell the story that sells the most but don't tell me that I am missing that gleeful look Dale Hansen gets when he reports bad news about SMU as something other than that man hates SMU.
Re: Do the Dallas media want SMU to succeed?
Sounds like you meant to answer 1983's post. #HammerDown
Re: Do the Dallas media want SMU to succeed? You're right. My mistake. But it applies to smupony94's comment about just reporting the facts, too.
And NewAgeMustang is right about Hansen, but of course, he really isn't media, anyway. When is the last time he actually covered anything? He covered the Cowboys a couple hundred years ago, but now he's little more than a game show host. And a slimy one, at that.
Re: Do the Dallas media want SMU to succeed?
Would have to agree that. #HammerDown
