http://www.statesman.com/news/sports/co ... ain/nhcXB/Mack Brown will decide in December whether he wants to return to coaching, his attorney and good friend Joe Jamail told me Sunday. Jamail said the former Texas football coach has already been offered coaching jobs but wouldn’t name them. “For comparable pay to what he was making and more,†Jamail said, “but he likes what he’s doing. He misses it, frankly, but he loves being on ESPN.†Asked if SMU reached out to Brown, Jamail said, “He was approached, I was approached, but he’s not interested in coaching anywhere right now.â€

If you have to deal with Jamil lets just move on to the next candidate. Not worth the headache.

Good they are approaching him while others might not be available to speak with. Always considered him a good recruiter or it just may have been the University appeal.

I don't know, that could go both ways. If his checkbook follows Mack....

I knew at least 2 Jamail's in my fraternity when I was at SMU. He has some loyalties to SMU too.

Unless you hire David Beaty or Chad Morris as a "head coach in waiting" (would never happen), hiring Mack Brown would be a disaster for SMU.

It's going to take a massive recruiting effort and a long-term timeline to get SMU up and running again. Have you seen the Longhorns lately?

Seriously. I'll take his opinion with a grain of salt. Mack Brown is the closest thing to a Larry Brown type of hire that is out there for SMU. If he's still got the fire in his belly to coach then he will assemble a staff of relentless recruiters that will give SMU a chance at landing some top DFW talent. The biggest issue that is facing SMU right now is talent. We just don't have any. The best guy to assemble a talented roster that will get us competitive as quickly as possible is Mack Brown.
Back off Warchild seriously.

I am the only one that remember his final years at Texas??? Mack Brown couldn't get the job done with consistent top 5 recruiting classes. He has no idea how to develop talent, which at SMU is necessary because we will never come close to the recruiting classes he saw at Texas. Mack Brown is not even in the same universe as Larry Brown. LB knows how to recruit and develop talent. How many of Mack Brown's players panned out in the NFL? Not many.
Hire Morris, Herman, or Heupel.

Mack Brown has been successful at every level. His time at UT overall clearly outperformed the previous couple UT coaches. I don't know if he is the best hire here but to say that a couple RELATIVELY down years at the end means he sucks as a coach is just ridiculous.

where there is smoke, there is an agent trying to get their client a better deal.
Hopefully those that matter in this decision are focused on what we all know would work at SMU - a hard charging young head coach who understands what it takes to be successful - who has the tools he needs to be successful (good staff). Not some old wash out who needs retirement money.
