Agreed. Also, people thumbing their noses at Mack are ridiculous. We would be lucky to get a coach of his caliber

The reason why they turn their noses up are because they feel like we are going to land the big time coordinator. As if we are the only ones in the know that these are the hot commodities. Lots of shake out will still occur in the coaching world in the coming months. The UH job might open open which is WAY more desirable than ours (we just need to take the blinders off) and that's in our own conference. I'd be personally thrilled with just about any coordinator mentioned or several "retreads" that have been thrown about (such as Mack). I'm hoping I'm dead wrong, but I have a feeling that our little board thinks we are a much more attractive job than we are in reality, and that we might strike out on a lot of the big names being bantered about here. We could do so much worse than Mack. Phil's available again after another successful coordinator stint!

Hopefully those that matter in this decision are focused on what we all know would work at SMU - a hard charging young head coach who understands what it takes to be successful - who has the tools he needs to be successful (good staff). Not some old wash out who needs retirement money.
Yes you notice he wouldn't confirm whether Michigan contacted them. Sounds like he may be going North.

He has no idea how to develop talent, which at SMU is necessary because we will never come close to the recruiting classes he saw at Texas. Mack Brown is not even in the same universe as Larry Brown. LB knows how to recruit and develop talent. How many of Mack Brown's players panned out in the NFL? Not many.
Hire Morris, Herman, or Heupel.
True, but the early years were great. Then again, so were the early JJ years...

Why would anyone believe JJ. Like he is the official spokesman for UT. That is a big problem with Ut, taking the big dollars but then those donors thinking they are spokesmen for the university.

I never said he sucks. Clearly he has had success. I just believe he is a terrible match for what we need. There is no denying he does a terrible job developing players. Texas players in the past 15 years have struggled making the transfer from college to the pros. They have had a perception of being soft. It is pretty damn easy to recruit when you are the flagship school in the state. It will not be the same at SMU and he will need to develop 3 star players to play like 4 star players. I just don't see that happening.

Mack Brown may not have "got the job done" per the fantastical expectations of the UT fan base, but I would say he definitely "got the job done" at UT per any objective standard. He won 1 NC and played for another. His teams finished in the top 10 several times. Now I know that UT people expect to win the NC every year, but the reality of UT's program is that they've done that maybe twice in the last 40 years. UT does less with more than any other program as far as I'm concerned. Mack Brown was downright Darrel Royal-esque in what he accomplished there.
I will grant you, however, that the last few years were not particularly good.

In the AAC we wont need to turn 3 stars into 4 stars. We just need to get 3 stars instead of 2 or less stars. I think just about anyone qualified who can put big effort into this can do that for SMU. Now if we want to beat our historic rivals we will need to move it up a notch from that - but first things first.
And ED - you are incorrect on the UH job. One big thing makes SMU better - money. We will pay more - and that includes for assistants. If you think that doesn't matter you are not watching where the top guys tend to go. There will be big completion for the Chad Morris types - but there will only be three or four openings better than us - and some of those may be filled with active HC choices.
