Agreed, but this is a tough deal for SMU & Hart. Mason obviously auditioning for future job and 'doing the right thing' because he's a stand up guy. I would trust Mason, Daniels & the new OLine coach to honestly pitch SMU to local recruits. Suan, Morrison & Barocio-Leon are pretty much irrelevant. But I certainly wouldn't trust Phillips or Broussard with a ten foot pole. They'll just be using SMU's dime to build relationships and recruit for their next employer, if they can find one. If Phillips wants to steal any of our existing mini slot commits that's fine, but keep him away from Proche & McCrary. Tough deal for SMU any way you slice it. New staff gonna have 60 days at best to perform miracles on the recruiting front.

Mason butted heads with jj for years.... rank has its privileges. Yes, twitter was off limits via jj.
Mason is a good man doing the best job he can. Loves smu and will continue to have contacts and friends here.
If he goes to bowl game, what a story. Might just keep this gig too.

I guess in that instance the goal would be to kill SMU Football for good.

I also take some solace in the fact that when the new coach goes to a High School the kids will have heard about SMU.

the whole university is [deleted] poor at social media. I'm glad they have finally stepped their game up. quite a few Universities are killing it at the social media game. you have to interact with the HS kids at the same level as everyone else.
Josh Sweat is following the associated twitters: MS State, Bama, Florida, A&M, UK, Yale, Georgia, Clemson, OU, Oregon, UT, Tenn, Ohio, Virginia, FSU, UCF, Penn St. and Miami. Either outright following their football teams or associated coaches/recruiting.

In 2012 (or was it early 2013?), Jason Phillips had SMU in the conversation with quite a few well-regarded recruits in East Texas. Then, for a few months, Phillips went inactive on the trail. Read into that what you will.

I was wondering the same thing when Phillips gave the ECU coach a huge hug and smile after the game. Looked like a man trying to get an interview.

Coach McNeil and Jason are good friends I believe. If you noticed it was Coach McNeil that initiated the hug not Coach Phillips.

Ruffin also gave Mason a huge hug after the game and called another coach over (might have been Morrison). He seemed to genuinely care about our coaches.

Ruffin can relate to their situation. Leach gets the Ax, Ruffin as the DC is put in as interim coach to salvage things (albeit not like our current situation), Ruffin trying to get the HC and did not, then landed at ECU. I think that was as much of a ... been there guys, hang in there moment. Plus, coaching is a tight community, these guys no each other very often.

Any idiot knows all you have to do is recruit the North Texas and Houston area alone along with eat Texas. What took these guys so long? And you don't have to get the top 4 and 5 star guys. There are plenty of great guys who have the ability and work ethic and will not be rated in the top 100 but you have to work to find em and get em to your camps....not the SMU joke camp but a real honest to goodness evaluation/training camp on SMU's campus.

Have a feeling the new staff will get their act together when it comes to camps as well. June & crew unfortunately viewed them more as a burden than an opportunity.

SMU2007 wrote:good point Stallion. Maybe this push is from Hart rather than Mason and staff.
Who knows. Mason recruited Cassel, Montes, Carroll, Fister etc from other states as the recruiting coordinator. Now all of a sudden he says in another tweet that no coach will leave Texas. I don't think JJ commanded him to go the out of state on those guys. He did it because he had some contacts there probably. Hart might be pushing this or Mason just knows what everyone wants to hear.

Since when was Mason the 'recruiting coordinator'? Never heard that term applied to anyone, let alone Mason. June never even had a recruiting strategy, let alone a coordinator that anyone is aware of. All of those Pacific NW guys were because of June's contacts out there, not Mason's. Jones grew up in Portland, went to Grant High School (home of Kenneth Acker by no coincidence), and played at Oregon & Portland St. This is the ONLY reason we spent money & resources out there vs. the DFW Metroplex as we should have. Nobody outside of you believes that Mason is doing or saying anything because of public sentiment or what people want to hear. Put that one to rest as well.
