Re: Natatorium almost downThey don't need to go indoor until after December, right? Sure they can work a deal with a high school somewhere if they need to.
Re: Natatorium almost downThe A.R. "Red" Barr Outdoor Pool will have a bubble erected over the pool this fall.

Re: Natatorium almost downIn a September 30th Letter to donors, Gerald Turner reports that we have received the initial leadership gifts for a new $20m swimming complex to be located on campus land east of Central Expressway.
![]() My endearing thanks to Bruce ('74) & Emily Robson, Steve ('74) & Shelli Lindley, Joe ('76) and Hannah Robson for their initial commitments for more than half the needed amount. Additional funds are being sought in order to begin construction next spring. ![]() Time to dig deep, my friends. ![]() Pony Up
Re: Natatorium almost down
Great news! Honest question. $20m is a lot of money, what kind of facility does that afford? Pony up!
Re: Natatorium almost downWill the swim team have sufficient meeting room space?
Re: Natatorium almost downIf they don't get more money the budget will be underwater.

Cost with expansion: $6.9 + $3.1 = $10 total: 50 meter pool with 8 lanes, plus two "buffer lanes". Moveable bulkhead, two 1m springboards, 1 3m springboard. Stands, warm-up pool 25 yards and control room. No weight room, but it does have small meeting rooms. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana_Un ... Natatorium IUPUI considered to be one of the fastest pools in the US/World. And a great place to swim, my lord the blocks are amazing in size, cost $21 to build in 1982. The Texas A&M Student Rec center: cost $37 to build the entire complex in which the natatorium is wonderful also an impressive place to swim. http://www.12thman.com/ViewArticle.dbml ... =205237904 It would be great to see a complex that has everything you need for the top programs that we have.
Re: Natatorium almost downThe $20m is not a surprising number. Six years ago, we priced a replacement on the Perkins Bishop Blvd. location at more than $16m.
A competitive swimming facility, as described above, has a large footprint. Imagine 50 meters (55yards) long by 25 yards. The length may be longer to accompany one or two moveable bulkheads to shorten the training length to 25yards, thus creating two 25 yard pools. Alternatively, you train or compete for high school and college meets across the width of the pool. Lots of flexibility is desirable, when you consider we have two swim teams, Men and Women, who competed for time in the pool at Perkins. And, not so fast my friends. You need a diving well to accommodate multiple one and three meter diving boards, plus a 10 meter platform. This diving requirement can be part of an even longer 50 meter pool, thus the need at least one moveable bulkhead (or a physically separate diving pool at one end.) In addition, it is desirable to have need extra pool lanes for warm-ups during dual meets, regional meets and national events, if we wish to promote them. Now, ... you still need to add spectator stands for 1-2k folks. With all of the this requirements, you need a building high enough for 10 meter platform, longer than 50 meters and wider than 25 yards, plus the space needed for locker rooms, restrooms, offices and the spectators. The result is a large building. This has been our dilemma to date, raising 90% of $16m, now $20m, for this program facility to support 2 swim teams and 2 diving teams for training and competition. Perkins lifecycle was extended many times, until it was condemn this year and removed so quickly. It has been a real challenge to get a new facility, but the future now appears real. ![]() Pony Up
Re: Natatorium almost downWater Pony,
I know its early, but any chance that Myrtha Pools is in play for designing?
Re: Natatorium almost down
I don't know the answer, but Myrtha is a brand name pool designer having done recent Olympic, Olympic Trials and National/World Championships globally. Pony Up
Re: Natatorium almost downThe big boys in water complex design and construction management is Cousilman-Hunsaker, based in Sunset Hills , MO ( a suburb of STL). Company originally owned by Doc Counsilman of Indiana University fame. It was always managed by, and later bought out by Joe Hunsaker, and now owned by his son.. Love ya Bruce, and that Walton golden touch !

Re: Natatorium almost downI can't wait, to see the new complex and how it will be designed.
On the SMU master plan it appears that they have a future outdoor pool behind the facility. Will they keep Barr Pool in the future?
