We may be in ok shape for next year if any of those freshmen can play. Sooner or later they will have to because we aren't likely to bring in any reinforcements ala the juco or transfer routes.

Those are pretty amazing numbers when you consider that PB had been here for 4 years and from the get-go his mantra was we need to get older and deeper on our lines.

2nd mantra was ‘I’ll never get blindsided at the QB position again’…well look at his options next year.

I don’t know how anyone can say our long-term prospects are good. Those who do rely on the pat response of…’if some of these freshmen can just step up’…well 90%+ of ‘these freshmen’ did not get legitimate offers from our peers.

Hey JT, will this satisfy your sunshine fix….

It's a pretty weak theory!!

That's so far out there it does not merit response.

However, other parts of your post do. Romo has already failed completely (see Tulane and Marshall games), so even if you were right, it should fall to the backup. And Wallis was a failed experiment from Bennett's past, I think you must be referring to Willis. As between Phillips and Willis, I doubt at this point of the season that the freshman has truly overwhelmed Phillips in practice or in any other aspect, and Phillips ought to get the chance to play first on the basis of his college game experience, if nothing else.

Sorry but I had to go to the bathroom. Here are the RBs:

Fr--5
Soph--3
Jr--0
Sr--1

Again we have a lot of freshmen. DM and Turner (not the President of SMU, the football player) are already playing but they are red-shirt fresmen, the best kind. Who from the Jr class is no longer among us?

Mr. EastStang,

I would not recommend using theoretical arguments when discussing SMU football.

Sincerely,

Man am I getting sick of this but here we go again. The TEs:

Fr--6
Soph--0
Jr--1
Sr-0

We seem to have fallen off in the Soph and Sr classes. Nonetheless we have a lot of freshmen. As much as the TE is an integral part of the SMU offense I am glad they are there for the future.

I had to make myself do the WRs. Here4 they are:

Fr--5
Soph--4
Jr--5
Sr--1

A pretty good mix. Where did the Srs go? Glad that true freshman Givens is getting plenty of PT--impressive number of catches this season. I refuse to do special teams--they don't matter anyway.

I did a double take. There is a senior running back? I looked at the roster and sure enough, there is one. Reggie Gilford. Has never seen the field to this day.

We can all agree SMU football sucks and is an absolute joke. We can all agree Bennett is not head coach material (although many of us came to this conclusion after his winless season [and he got a contract extension!]). We can all agree Bennett is a desparate man who will burn ever read shirt on the team if it means winning just one game which is irrelevant at this point. We can all agree SMU's athletic model does not work and has placed us at a disadvanatge. We can all agree Copeland and Bennett need to be fired immediately! I mean now! to show the twenty or so alumni and fans losing is unacceptable.

In many ways that winless season bothers me more now than it did then. At least if we go 1-10 (a real possibility) we can look back and know that we beat TCU. One week when we didn't feel like we just got hit by a truck. What can I say about your post BJ? Pretty much sums it all up.

Exactly.

You win the job in the Spring, but you can still lose the job in the summer.

Unfortunately, the ncaa sidelines are full of quality players who never 'get it'. Unlike their HS FB team, most everybody on the team has plenty of talent. It's what they do with that talent in the off-season that elevates them to the next level.

Of course, how you play in the Fall is how you keep your job.

and I don't care how long Phil Bennett jacks with his buddies-Division 1AA QBs like Wallis, Eckert and Romo , they ain't going to play well at this level. Look at all those guys on offense who have been mentioned worked so hard this summer and guess what they are part of the worst offense in the country. Why? because about 5 players who have started on offense don't have Division 1A talent. That's why we get 7 First Downs, 127 yards Total Offense, and 3 TDs in 13 Quarters.

You need to stop calling people who have the nerve to disagree with you names. It may be standard operating procedure in the legal world, but it doesn't work in a conversation with a fellow fan on a fan website.

And to the poster who said that we all agree that Bennett can't coach, well I disagree. Bennett is not the problem.

It's not name-calling, it's just a term of endearment I use to encourage sunshiners to continue to offer rosy endorsements of the current state of SMU athletics for the entertainment value of such posts. Not that you need any encouragement--with the withdrawal of GoRedGoBlue, you are now entrenched firmly at the head of the pack.

So please, tell us how great everything is over on the Hilltop.
