I see what you did there. Thanks. Rebel10 wrote:Desoto is just an example. It's not just Desoto but the entire southern sector of Dallas. It's kind of like we want them to come to football games and give SMU their good athletes but we don't want to reach out to them. They notice this stuff like the young man said.
Thanks

June didn't create the entitled country club atmosphere at SMU. As a matter of fact, he fought against it -- which is at least part of the reason why many here so irrationally hate him. The letter writer is correct about the recruiting part, of course. But he's also correct that we don't include the "great unwashed" very well. Sorry to make you spit part of your bloody mary on that blue blazer.

Baylor & TCU in the top 10, SMU always trying to convince itself it is better than both. Reasons too long to list why they are no longer our peers, add this letter to the list.

The thanks to June are because they never wandered out there to recruit. Larry does recruit Southern Dallas, June did not. And Even though we do have a country club attitude, I don't think Boulevard or Ford have that vibe, it is pretty welcoming. But we need the admin and the new coach to shatter that perception. Our other AAC peers are doing the same in their cities, we should do so too. Example: Temple recruiting Philly hard.

your post reeks of an agenda. the hatred toward June has absolutely NOTHING to do with anything other than failure to do his job. period. accept that and move on. most students at SMU are on some sort of aid package - I know I was. you are perpetuating the stereotype with your stupid post about blue blazers. and what the hell is wrong with a bloody mary? that statement is downright unamerican.

Big12M, this attitude existed long before June but June did not make matters better by failing to build relations with local coaches in all area districts. In fact, it may have made it worse as it relates to the coaches view of SMU.

How does SMU prioritize? Raising academic standards and admitting half the students from outside Texas doesn't leave a lot of opportunities for south dallad

I'm sure there are great students at DeSoto and SOC who would be great additions at SMU. We just need to work with the guidance counselors to keep us in mind. Our admissions staff ought to send a some nice attractive folks to talk to some of these counselors about the rigors and benefits of SMU, so that these folks think of us instead of U of D or UNT, etc.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

In essence you are saying there are few, if any, students in southern Dallas County that can meet SMU's academic standards. Really? Talk about stereotyping a whole community.

SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Does anyone seriously think SMU is welcoming to a normal person from DeSoto or Mesquite or 99% of the rest of America? The answer is no and it is a real problem if you care about becoming a team with any fanbase whatsover. I don't know if there is any solution, but it's a problem. We are a bubble within a bubble and filled to the brim with Biffs and Muffys. TCU has some demographic similarities, but they draw their students and therefore alumni much more from locals than we do. Plus they've been wildly successful on the field and Fort Worth doesn't have any other entertainment choices.

Maybe we should try that "wildly successful on the field" thing.

It'd be a start, but wouldn't solve the problem by itself.

It'll make solving the rest of the problem much easier. People like winners, no matter the socioeconomic background.

True. But it's a bit of a chicken and egg thing.
