There are very rich men who treat the team like they own it.
Remember when Jerry Jones fired J Johnson? Same thing - ego driven decision making.

Re: Austin paper: Mack, lawyer approached by SMU
Jimmy Johnson tried to get fired imo. He wanted to coach the dolphins but could not because he was under contract with the cowboys. The firing gave him the avenue he needed to coach the dolphins. Mack did not want to leave. "We will play man to man and we will pick you up at the airport." - Larry Brown

Re: Austin paper: Mack, lawyer approached by SMUI don't know how people could really be so against a Mack hire. Yeah he had a rough last 3-4 yrs, but they still only lost 4 games last year in the Big12 with a terrible roster (a roster that would have beaten us 60-0)...and was a half away from winning the Big12. Have y'all forgotten his 15 or so years before that? He single handedly turned UNC around, had 10-12 straight 10 win seasons and 2 title trips at Texas. I don't know about y'all, but we can't get any worse than we are right now. I only see this hire as a positive. He has incredible ties with TX highschools...and that's what we are looking for right?
Re: Austin paper: Mack, lawyer approached by SMU
1. I don't know if his relationship with HS coaches is that great. If you are HC at Texas you are not going to have problems getting recruits if you have a good relationship or not. 2. Let's see, the last two Heisman winners from Texas, Mack wanted to make them DB's not QB's http://thebiglead.com/2012/11/27/mack-brown-tried-to-recruit-robert-griffin-iii-and-johnny-manziel-as-a-defensive-back-and-safety/ 3. I think because of SMU's incredible success with Larry Brown, we think we can do it again with Mack and football. This is a dangerous way of thinking. 4. Just my opinion, I think Mack is a good coach, but an absolutely terrible match for what we need...
Re: Austin paper: Mack, lawyer approached by SMU
If he could not develop 5 star players for UT what makes you think he could develop 2 and 3 star players for SMU? He was called "Coach February" because of all the talent he brought to UT. He had the most talent in the Big 12 but lost 4 games. Here is Mack's record in the last 4 years with the most 5 star players of any Big 12 team. 5–7 8–5 9–4 8–5 #HammerDown
Re: Austin paper: Mack, lawyer approached by SMU
I couldn't disagree more with #1, #3 & #4. 1. What are you basing this on?? I believe it is commonly known that Mack's ability to develop relationships with Texas HS coaches and recruiting the state is unmatched. The reason UT got to the point where they could basically pick their players in the state is because of the relationships he built. It wasn't like that before he arrived. 2. If you want to debate his ability to develop players, or how to use those players you would have a better argument. This is the only point you made that I agree with. 3. I'm not sure how this direction is dangerous. IMO, hiring an experienced coach is far less risky. Plus, we've had zero success hiring coordinators post DP. 4. A terrible match for what we need?? What do you think we need? I don't think there is a better person around to fix this quickly. He's the ultimate salesman. He already has great relationships throughout the state in the high schools ranks. He will instantly put SMU back on the map. Is Mack perfect, no, but he can provide exactly what what we need now. He would upgrade the talent overnight and begin to repair the damage between SMU and Texas HS coaches, which is way more significant than many realize. Re: Austin paper: Mack, lawyer approached by SMU
Honest question. I understand the perception of Mack due to how his tenure ended at UT. I understand the perception that he was able to get the best talent at UT simply because it was UT. So how did he do it at UNC and Tulane? Was he ever able to develop talent or was it simply he was getting the best recruits there based on the school and/or location? Is your belief simply that he had lost "it"? I get that. And that would be the major question if we were to move forward with him. Tickle Me And Rub My Belly!
Re: Austin paper: Mack, lawyer approached by SMU
His best record at Tulane was 6-6 so he never did actually have a winning regular season there like Rich Rod did. But at UT he was able to get so much talent that it overshadowed his development of players. Sure we could do worse than Mack but his trajectory at UT was downward not upward. If just think if we are hoping for another Larry Brown as some stated then that is dangerous thinking. But we'll see what happens. #HammerDown
Re: Austin paper: Mack, lawyer approached by SMULarry Brown was also fired from his last job so I guess he sucks.
All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
Re: Austin paper: Mack, lawyer approached by SMUFair enough but say:
Chad Morris turns us down Philip Montgomery turns us down Lincoln Riley turns us down then we are starting to get down to a Mike Cavan, Phil Bennett trainee like Beaty without an reputation as a top notch coordinator ready to install an offense. I'm going to be looking at Mack at that point because I know he could hire a top notch coaching staff that can recruit Texas "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: Austin paper: Mack, lawyer approached by SMUi think morris will get a better offer, but remain hopeful he will want to come back to Texas.
I know he interviewed for Texas Tech (ultimately the job went to Kliff) and was linked to Wake Forest when Grobe left.

Re: Austin paper: Mack, lawyer approached by SMU
Strategic thinking. I assume this is how Hart is approaching the search. What if We go through those and miss on all of them. Does Hart go after head coach looking to move up - that had had success? An atheist is a guy who watches a Notre Dame-SMU football game and
doesn't care who wins. -- Dwight D. Eisenhower
Re: Austin paper: Mack, lawyer approached by SMU
Yes! Mack probably isn't the number one guy right now but we could do a lot worse. I'd pee my pants if we landed Mack or Morris. Texas bites. Baylor sucks. As it was in the beginning, is now, and evermore shall be. Amen.
Re: Austin paper: Mack, lawyer approached by SMUyou guys are crazy. If Mack wants to come here, you hire him immediately. His name alone will get people talking about SMU.
