If Mack Brown was such a great coach at UT why isn't he still coaching there?

But, Jimmy only had to deal with Jerry.

Mack had to deal with about 10 Billionares who spend a lot of time jockeying for power on the 40 Acres. Forcing him (and Dodds) out was a power play by some of them against the others.

Well he did have the number one recruiting class in the country several times. You would think he would have won as many championships as Saban since they both recruit about the same.

The people who don't want Mack Brown are divorced from reality. The legendary resume, ties to Texas, name recognition, and ability to assemble an incredible staff make Mack Brown an unbelievable hire for SMU. If we can't land Morris then Mack should be our primary target. No other coach is out there that we have a realistic shot at getting has the ability to turn this thing around quicker than Mack.

Simms, Young, and McCoy 1.0 all got drafted early in the NFL draft. All started for NFL teams. Heck, even Applewhite got to go to camp with an NFL roster.

His "can't develop a QB" reputation only occured b/c Gilbert/Ash couldn't stay healthy and McCoy 2.0 blew.

1. What are you basing this on?? I believe it is commonly known that Mack's ability to develop relationships with Texas HS coaches and recruiting the state is unmatched. The reason UT got to the point where they could basically pick their players in the state is because of the relationships he built. It wasn't like that before he arrived.

Mack's relationship with Texas HS coaches WAS unmatched. In his final years at UT many HS coaches soured on him for a number of reasons. How do I know this? My brother-in-law is a HS head coach in Texas. My nephew is a HS head coach in Texas. Another of my brothers-in-law is a UT booster all of them -- along with other sources -- have said that Mack did not maintain good will with many coaches throughout the state.

Is Mack Brown a decent person? Yeah, I think so.
Was Mack a good football coach? Yes, but I think the operative word is WAS. Mack let things slide at UT and that's why he isn't there anymore. He was never an innovative coach or a firebrand motivator, he was a somewhat passive CEO type. I don't think that's what we need.

If Mack Brown is SMU's next football coach, I'll support him (what other choice do I have?) and I hope he makes me eat my words and takes SMU to the football heights. But, based upon what I have seen and heard, I don't think Mack Brown is the guy to do it.

No, no, no. He lost a bunch of highly ranked QB recruits who signed with UT and then drifted off elsewhere after a season or two in Austin. One of them was a highly regarded HS QB out of Arizona, another was Matt Nordgren. The Gilbert saga goes deeper than just Mack's inability to develop him. Brown took GG's mind away and almost pushed him out of the program. Brown and his staff very nearly did the same to Vince Young over Young's throwing motion. VY had a sidearm delivery that Mack tried to "correct." The thing is, Young's sidearm delivery is characteristic of QBs that throw on the run (like Single Wing QBs). By trying to make VY into a snap-at-the-chinstrap, Unitas style passer, Mack nearly tore up his meal ticket to the 2005 national championship. Ultimately, VY was saved by having Mack and Greg Davis back off and stop helping him.

Brown's dealings in the Simms/Applewhite debate nearly cost him dearly there as well. He just flat out showed very poor judgment in that mess.

Brown also proved obstinate when it came to his offensive coordinator Greg Davis, who was lousy, yet Mack refused to dump the guy until the boosters nearly mutinied over him.

Hiring a coach is always a crapshoot. Had we known what a stellar coach Bill Snyder would be, we would have hired him years ago and where would SMU football be now?
