I am tired of this ponyfans [deleted] negativity. If you think SMU can never be in a P5 and have a premier national program, why be a fan? Is this a freakin pity page? We are being looked at by some of the best candidates out there, let's act the part. It is great that we are good in hoops but this is Texas, and not many care about that sport. Back the football team and believe that we can go back to the majors doing it the right way.

Memphis has a lot of potential I believe. SEC country. Big time hoops. Improving football. If they get there S together I think they have a shot. No reason they can't be as attractive as Cincy for example.

I think it is good for the AAC to gain a place in the Power Conferences. Ratings and wins.

Iso let's put it this way, if SMU, Houston and Memphis all had solid basketball and improving football, but you could only pick two, which media markets would you pick?

Academics normally wouldn't matter here, but there are exceptions to every rule and UM might just be it.

Forbes has you ranked #609, one spot below SE Louisiana.

That is pathetically, laughably low.

School endowment of $183M, I think our artwork at Meadows is worth more.

Plus aren't you really just a glorified commuter school?

You have nothing on SMU.

Thank you SoCal_pony. Memphis has nothing on us. We are better than 3/4 of the P5 jobs even right now. If SMU was Big 12 at this moment, we would be a top 10 job.

Not sure this "Memphis is in SEC Country... that's an advantage" logic is exactly sound.

What's the basis for the belief that being a mid-major program in SEC country is an advantage?

What it really means is that they might as well not bother recruiting any kid from their recruiting area that has an SEC offer. There are very few kids that are going to go to Memphis if they have an offer from Ole Miss, MSU, Arkansas, etc.

Maybe it's some thought that, if they have success, they might get into the SEC at some point? Won't happen... ever. The SEC requires a unanimous vote of members before any new school can be added. Memphis has at least 3 votes against them - Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Ole Miss. The SEC gains nothing by adding Memphis. The SEC already dominates the Memphis TV market so they would add no value to the conference. As has been said, their academic reputation is... not good. That's a minus to a league that, if anything, wants to improve its overall academic reputation - you don't do that taking a school that gets a "RNP" (Rank Not Published) by US News.

My feeling is that SMU probably has, at the present, a slightly higher ceiling than Memphis. The DFW area produces more talent every year than Tennessee. A lot of those kids that don't get a big local offer might be tempted to stay home and go to a great University. On the flip side, Memphis just doesn't have a lot going for it in football. The fact that they lease a stadium from the city of Memphis is not a selling point. Their every day facilities are terrible... especially when a kid that has any good offers compares them.

A crappy commuter school with a $180m "endowment" can't claim to have "boosters". To be clear, not trying to make this some tired endowment argument, it's just beyond incredulous to suggest you have deep pockets.
