All the players are well aware of how hard he (K) works and really like him as their offensive leader. Pope will move to inside linebacker, but not where he played last year. He will play where Joyner played and Horton/Yenga will play the other inside. He really likes Horton. But right now Horton needs a "vet" next to him to help get everyone lined up correctly. Maybe this lets Yenga play outside. Morrison did a good job of showing where Kristich and receivers can make better decisions and have short gains be long ones. Some good video of that - he thinks they will learning quickly and get better at that. Morrison will continue to tweak the offense week by week so it will look quite different by the end of the season. At luncheon times all other coaches were out recruiting at local schools except Mason and Morrison. Cornerbacks have been hurt a lot and that has really held the defense back. It was about 80-90% full. I think it was very good. Mason got around and talked to most people who were there. He told me after that Cincy was not ready to play against Memphis, then their QB got hurt and they got killed. Thinks they can beat Cincy.
Thanks. Really appreciate the thorough review.

Interesting that he would single out Claude Mathis when there were other coaches saying the same thing. Calling out Mathis probably will not help him with DeSoto. Again, more than Mathis said this about SMU. http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/colleg ... oaches.ece
Not good to do that. I wonder if Coach Mason has called Coach Mathis since he has been the interim head coach. Plus I think the FWST had an article the said that the SMU coaches needed to improve their recruiting the most.

If you were not there you do not know the context. It may have been he was specifically asked about Mathis and he emphatically denied. Of course I was not there so I do not know either.

Bergermeister was there and wrote that. Maybe he can explain the discounting emphatically.

There was not a question about South Dallas/DeSoto. Mason volunteered that they had been recruiting those areas, though not as well as they should have been. i didn't think he was out of place saying what he did. He was defending what had been done to an extent, but saying they needed to do better.

That sounds like a better answer than Bergermister's. Doesn't sound like discounting emphatically. Did not think he would call out a coach that he would be trying to recruit players from. Thanks Ponyswim.

FYI - Some high school coaches don't like SMU. Maybe something was said to them in 1989 or they are sand aggies. Mason said we need 15 guys per year from the metro out of the 200 plus that go D1.
That can happen. How about that, a goal for local recruiting.

How about the primary goal being get the best players possible. Period. How about a rule that says if you have two players of equal talent and one's local, you always take the local player. Some people just want to leave home though. I did.

Mason did say that they would continue to look at out of state kids, because some of the coaches have connections all over. We have all heard that recruiting is about relationships, and if you have 20-30 year relationships with coaches you want to take advantage of that- wherever they are. He said has 20 former players that coach HS in Washington - so if they have someone good that they will help him with great - they will pursue. But when it comes to spending time initiating and building new relationships, the focus is this area.
Another interesting thing that Morrison said was he trying to have Kristich line up a little deeper, and how that would help him. He will continue to do little things like that which hopefully will have the impact of much better offensive play.

which is pretty much how I suggested out of state recruiting should be handled. Now think if all 10 Coaches had 20 "prior relationships" with former players who were coaches in Texas rather than Washington

Where was all this relationship building and effort in recruiting the last 6 years? June Jones and his staff have been out worked by other schools the last 6 years and it shows on the field. He acts like he just arrived at SMU last week and inherited a team he knew nothing about. I am not buying the bull crap.

Mason confirmed what Rebel pointed out in another thread - he is/was in charge of Allen, Plano, Garland, Mesquite. I took it as basically north and northeast Dallas.
Have there been relationship problems at those schools? Or are the issues in other areas of Dallas?
Obviously, it would be nice to get some players from the Allen program, but I think we have pulled quite a few out of Garland, Mesquite and Plano...
