I was always under the impression that Mason had the NW contacts, because of his time in Idaho, etc.
But you're right. Mason was never the recruiting coordinator, I don't think.

Who knows. Mason recruited Cassel, Montes, Carroll, Fister etc from other states as the recruiting coordinator. Now all of a sudden he says in another tweet that no coach will leave Texas. I don't think JJ commanded him to go the out of state on those guys. He did it because he had some contacts there probably. Hart might be pushing this or Mason just knows what everyone wants to hear.
Since when was Mason the 'recruiting coordinator'? Never heard that term applied to anyone, let alone Mason. June never even had a recruiting strategy, let alone a coordinator that anyone is aware of.
All of those Pacific NW guys were because of June's contacts out there, not Mason's.
Nobody outside of you believes that Mason is doing or saying anything because of public sentiment or what people want to hear. Put that one to rest.
So he went after Montes, Carroll and Fister etc because June told him to? In an interview he said that he knew those coaches from his days at Fresno State. You know, that California school. He's trying to get the job. Now all of a sudden the DFW area is major ground. Klemm was the recruiting coordinator before Mason. Mexmustang also indicated that Mason was the recruiting coordinator on more than one occasion. Mason could be trying to do damage control on that DMN article. But again, not knocking him because I would do the same.

What do you mean this mess he was handed? He said that he recruited 3/4th's of the team so he had a big part to do with making the mess. Also Corso, weren't you one of the ones saying that JJ recruiting classes were better than people thought and to trust JJ? I believe so.
I don't know if there was ever an official recruiting coordinator after Klemm left? Actually, I vaguely remember something about Randy Ross actually being the recruiting coordinator?
Anyway, I think there is a difference between actively recruiting an area and people just reaching out. The NW contacts June had would tell him to look at a player, and he would do it. I am sure Mason's coaching contacts reached out to him and told him to look at someone.
The staff divided up texas by coaches. If memory serves (again, don't remember), I think originally Mason had East Texas, but that was taken over by Phillips when he came on because of the Houston contacts. Or maybe that was JR (who I know had Louisiana for a period of time). I think Dallas was split up with Morrison and Bert Hill?
I don't think Mason was recruiting coordinator. But he was going to be involved with most of the recruits because he has the best personality on the coaching staff, and is the guy you want to go out and meet the parents of the kids.

Mason had Mesquite, Garland, Wylie, Allen, Frisco, and the Plano schools. Hill has East Texas. Both did a poor job.
Some of you aren't well informed-Mason played the largest role in recruiting on the staff whether he was recruiting coordinator or not. He basically had veto power on defense. Ross was not recruiting coordinator-he was the Head of High School Relations-not an official football staff position that can recruit off campus.

Thanks, couldn't remember! I think we have gotten kids out of Mesquite and Garland over the years, but not getting kids from Allen is a big deal. Did he have Plano also? Seems like we have a couple from W Plano.
It is not that players from Allen haven't been offered, they just chose to go elsewhere. Tom Mason has developed great relationships with coaches in all of his territories. It must be noted that it is very unusual for a coordinator to actually recruit, but even June could see that Mason is a great recruiter and had him actively recruiting... One of the very few of our staff who worked that hard.

This is incorrect, SMU bumbled the Tay Evans and Christian Sam recruitment as I mentioned in another thread. They were quoted as saying that they didn't hear from SMU after attending the spring game although they were very excited about the SMU program. Would SMU have gotten them? Probably not-they soon blew up-but the lack of follow up is irresponsible. We need to root the entire coaching staff out of Ford
