Re: SMU football ....I'll tell you why NTSU gets no respect. No quality wins Zero, zip, nada. Haven't beaten anybody of any consequence. Went to a bowl game with a losing record last year. Plenty of money games with no chance of winning but just for a payday over the last several years. That about sums it up. Beat somebody and you might get some respect. You could go a long way towards that end if you win the bowl game. If you get crushed don't expect respect. BTW saw where Dickey's name is mentioned at Houston. That should make your AD happy since he doesn't like him anyway.
Re: SMU football ....Dave "Senile" Smith? Give me a break. No sense jawin'. You gotta play the game. If that's not happenin', why even discuss it?

Hmmm .... depends who they play. Proud to be a PonyFan
Re: SMU football ....1st of all, congrats to UNT for winning their 2nd consecutive SunBelt title and earning a return trip to the New Orleans Bowl. I wish we could be doing the same (winning a conference title and going to a bowl).
Although I do think the SBC is a weaker conference than the WAC, you can't excape the fact that UNT ran through that group undefeated. For those who would say the Sagarin or any other rating favors the SBC over the WAC, I say you have to look at non-conference WINS, and both our conferences are a joke in that category. I know San Jose beat Illinois, but did any other WAC team beat anyone from a BCS conference? Does the SBC own a single victory against a BCS conference opponent? When "judging" the strength of the mid-major conferences, that is a good measuring stick, IMO. As for SMU playing UNT in the future, personally I'd like to see us play UNT & TCU (and Baylor) every year, but agree that in our current situation it's not likely to happen. Our non-conference slate must include our most natural rival TCU every year and UNT is not as attractive an opponent as anyone from the BCS conference (we have Baylor, TTech, Okie St, Northwestern and Wake Forest on future schedules). While a home game with Wake or even Northwestern might not draw as well as UNT, it's still all about beating someone from a BCS conference if you are playing for respect in a "mid-major" conference. I really hope someday the NCAA restructures conferences and aligns teams regionally based on athletic budgets. If that ever happens and the so-called "Super Conferences" are created, then I would hope to see SMU playing in a conference with TCU, UNT, Baylor, Rice, Houston, La Tech, Tulane, Tulsa and possibly La-Laf, La-Mon and Ark St, if the latter 3 survive as I-A programs. Unless the BCS thing blows up, the more likely scenario is a restructuring of the mid-major conferences when the I-A vs. I-AA fallout occurs and there's a good chance we will be aligned with UNT at that point, anyways. UNT needs to try to do what SMU has, i.e., schedule a home game or two that will draw 30,000 fans so your conference slate doesn't put you in jeopardy of losing I-A status because of poor attendance. SMU wouldn't qualify based on our WAC attendance figures.
Re: SMU football ....Nacho, no quality wins? We are tied with Tech 4-4 with our last two wins coming in Lubbock. Granted, we don't have many OOC wins, but they are there. Similar to SMU... when is your last quality win?
After lastnight's basketball game with Tech, I can't wait to come see UNT play at Moody!
Re: SMU football ....Your only quality win was Nicholls St. If you bring up the Past, I thought that was what ya'll hated, then Where would you like to start? SMU has quality wins in the past over just about Any major University you can name. But if you want talk this year, we have La Tech, ya'll have Nicholls St.
Re: SMU football ....Have to agree with Charleston Pony. If I have any surviving brain cells from that era, I think we DID play a couple of games against UNT in the post death penatly seasons. Of course I had some friends up there, so I may have just gone up there when the Ponies were out of town.
But to the point, I want to play old SWC teams for our limited non-conference games. If I can't have UT and A&M (yet), give me TTech, Baylor, Arkansas, Houston and throw Tulane in for good measure. TCU is a must and I like having OSU on the schedule too. All of these schools are solid IA football programs who (with the exception of Tulane) have a decent local alumni base to fill the stadium. I thought Navy was a good choice this past year since sailors and Marines are loyal and came out to Ford in good numbers. Just because our program is down right now, I'm sick of hearing from my friends at UNT and Southwest Texas State University who somehow think we need to play them. What's next? Trinity University in San Anotonio? McNeese State? Gimme a break. "It's a couple hundred million dollars. I'm not losing sleep over it." -- David Miller
Re: SMU football ....SMU last played UNT in 1992, winning 28-14. SMU leads the all-time series 27-3-1.
Re: SMU football ....PERIOD
Re: SMU football ....I am hearing alot of reasons why SMU shouldn't play UNT, some of them really bad, some of them really good (the OOC schedule is hard to manage).
We last played a game 10 years ago, while we where 1aa, no doubt you where much stronger than us then, but that isn't the case anymore. This is our 2nd straight bowl, your last bowl game happened when I was in 2nd grade. Anyway, I didn't come on here to flame anyone, so good with your program.
Re: SMU football ....Why are you here, if not to flame?

I come over hear to read posts because 1) you are an area school and 2) Alot of our coaching staff has SMU connections. The first post I made in this thread was just a correction, and a I wish you guys luck with your last game. I got a little defensive when people started bashing UNT, but who doesnt stick up for thier school? You may not believe this, but I would love to see a strong SMU program and a strong UNT program playing each other in Fouts and Ford. ------------------ GoMeanGreen.com
Re: SMU football ....Not that it changes the point of your comment DigitalEagle, but that last bowl game for SMU came when bowl games meant some thing....today, they're a dime a dozen except maybe for the BCS bowls. I mean get serious, for your bowl game last year, you had a losing season except for your efforts in the stellar SBC. I'm really glad for you UNT folks and you should enjoy the experience, but don't get too damn full of yourselves.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: SMU football ....Pretty funny. Your logic is conflicting!
Your last bowl was when bowls meant something. Now they are a dime a dozen. If they are a dime a dozen, and everyone goes (and you will tell UNT that theirs is worthless), why hasn't SMU been to a bowl game in (guessing) 15 years? True, this year UNT doesn't have the OOC quality win. Talking recent past football isn't out of question... bringing up the 80's and your football prowess is ridiculous. I balk at the notion of LaTech being a "quality" win. USF is a game we should have won... otherwise, who in their right mind would think we could compete with UT and Bama? NMSU is a pretty big win. They are a good team (regardless of your WAC arrogrance).
