PHIL PHACTS

Postby SoCal_Pony » Thu Oct 06, 2005 12:24 pm

Here is our ranking by year for points scored and points allowed under the PB regime.

2002 – Offense #113 / Defense #89
2003 – Offense #119 / Defense #94
2004 – Offense #109 / Defense #113
2005 – Offense #108 / Defense #90

In summary, over the past 4 years, we have the worst offense and one of the 5 worst defenses in all of D1-A.

You defenders of PB who say our woes are due to ‘poor play calling’, ‘offensive line troubles’, or ‘bad officiating’…you defenders who say we are ‘improving, but not at a pace some are comfortable with’ or that ‘we are young’…you are missing the bigger picture here.

By every imaginable criterion, including special teams play, we are one of the worst programs in America and will not get materially better with the current players on this team. We simply need better players. PB recruited these better players his first 2 years here. Now most have left and with them so have our prospects for turning this thing around.

It is now time for Copeland and PB to leave…Copeland first.

4 STRAIGHT years of being in the lower 90% percentile (at least) offensively and lower 75% percentile (at least) defensively. Not a great sign.

My A&M friends are starting a petition to get Phil hired as A&M's defensive coach. People that want him gone get their wish but who would want the job?

Defensively SMU was ranked in the Top 35 or so at least 3 years under Schumann/Cavan-with very average talent I might add.

Most consider Coach Schumann to be a bona fide defensive genius. I don't have any knowledge of the politics involved, but from an outsiders perspective, it seemed to me at the time that Cavan and/or Copeland burned Schumann as a sacrificial lamb to pacify us disgruntled fans and alumni.

he wasn't fired by Cavan. He just wasn't retained by Bennett who wanted to bring in his own guys.

Sounds like the spin on this was that Bennett did not want a DC that was better than him. Right?
Just send 'da money.

Different philosophies...Schumann worked his defensive schemes around the capabilities of his players...Bennett tries to make his players fit his defensive scheme despite their capabilities which, in case you haven't noticed, they generally don't have the right capabilities.

The definition of insanity...doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. Also defines stubborn.
