Nope not in either year. Almost was there but the Arkansas tie hurt that chance. #HammerDown
Re: Last time #1We were declared national champs in 82 by some not so known poll. Does that count
![]() Found it in Wiki. " the Helms Athletic Foundation declared the team to be their national champions." May the forth be with us.
Re: Last time #1Texas A&M would claim it. If their student newspaper votes them #1 they put it up in the stadium.

Re: Last time #1Middle-aged and older will remember the great teams from SMU's past but many around the country don't remember and anyone under 35 doesn't remember that SMU and UT were the last national champions from Texas...albeit SMU's was from a less well-known poll. Point is they have some great teams from the past and they can do it again but it is going to be a hard road with much commitment before it happens. Do you think the ole Miss and Miss State (who has never won a SEC title) now think it is worth it? Anyway, the journey is what is funnest when you look back, not the actual title itself.
Re: Last time #1
Since there was no official national champion declared in those days it does count. Alabama claims a ton of national championships and none of them are official.
