Rocky Long

Let me introduce you to Rocky Long. Long is the coach of the New Mexico Lobos. He played at UNM back in the late â€˜60's, early â€˜70's. Prior to his first head coaching job at UNM, he was the defensive coordinator at UCLA.

Longâ€™s coaching record at UNM:

98 3-9
99 4-7
99 5-7
01 6-5
02 7-7 2nd in MWC
03 8-5 2nd in MWC
04 7-5 2nd in MWC

Currently, UNM is one of the stronger teams in the MWC.

Long has accomplished these records without the benefit of having a true high school base in the State of New Mexico to recruit from. What do you think he could do with the State of Texas, and specifically the Dallas/Fort Worth area, as being a base which to pull from in recruiting?

If a coach came to SMU and turned around this program, that coach would be a sure candidate to land a very lucrative coaching job at a lower rung school in a BCS conference.

Money and exposure (Dallas).

First, we would have to compensate him at a rate more than he is currently making.

Second, he does not get the exposure in New Mexico that he would get here. Like I said, if he could turn around our moribund program he would have the Dallas media at his feet. If he could pull off here what he did in his first five years at New Mexico, he would be off to a school that was in the bottom half of a BCS conference to turn their fortunes around also. With that comes even bigger exposure ($$$).

If Long comes here and can't turn it around, he is no worse off than before. No one expects him to accomplish anything. He can go back and coach at another school on UNM's level, which currently is above us.

so far New Mexico has had SRO at its home football games. They won't let him go w/o a fight. I seriously doubt he would even spend a nanosecond considering this job-to leave his alma mater. Doubt it.

To continue this pointless argument because I don't think he would leave UNM for SMU unlike Fran left UNM for TCU.

The word has to be getting out around coaching circles that this place is a last resort kind of coaching stop. The kind of place that you come to if you can't possibly get a head coaching job anywhere else and you have been trying a long time.

Get Chow, the o-coordinator from USC. He is a genius. You would have to open up Fort Knox and even then I don't think he would come. In fact I'm certain he wouldn't. Get Schumann as d-coordinator. I can dream can't I? Well, can't I?

But now the recruiting restraints have been lessened, and the returning talent is better. He might at least interview.

Head coach has to meet 2 criteria:

1) Desperation
2) Desperation

I don't think Butch fits the 2 criteria.

word has already gotten around the coaching circles. newspaper articles have quoted PB saying people questioned him accepting the smu job. they didn't think it was the best move.
