ding ding, we have a winner. Couldn't tell in practice because everyone lost size and strength equally, but it is apparent that this team is significantly smaller and weaker than last season's team.
We have had the same strength and conditioning coach for years. So that might not be the case. What we do not have is GG carrying the team with his play on the field which covered up the lack of talent.

But wasn't this billed as the "Biggest, strongest, fastest team since the DP"? We were frequently told by the practice gurus that everyone "looked the part". How could this team possibly be smaller and weaker than previous teams?
They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security
That is what was said. Some even said that the current team had enough talent to win 4 games. Practice reports were pretty good. So it is probably not the weight room but the recruiting room that is the problem.
I'm paraphrasing but JJ said before the season that this was the most talented team he's had at SMU. It is sad he doesn't have to address that statement now. Incredible.

obviously kids are going to check out when you recruit the kind of outstanding character that is present in a good amount of the kids..... (how thick can sarcasm be applied)
I've been at a wedding all weekend and just got around to watching the game on DVR.
There is so much give-up on this team (and I'm talking about players) it isn't even funny. We've got a bunch of kids who are stealing money from this university and getting a free education to simply go through the motions. There will need to be a massive purge of this June Jones led team of what is left of his influence.
Between the kids who have mentally/physically checked out and those that have zero business on scholarship playing D1A football we could have as many as 40 scholarships that need to be opened up at year's end.

Remember, any given year you can only add 25 scholarships plus any unused from the previous year (5 in SMU's case). So if the number of graduating seniors + those run off exceeds 30, SMU's numbers will take a hit. Unless of course, the new staff can convince some players to walk-on.
I think this will be the lasting legacy of June Jones that could take 2 or 3 years to fully root out of the program. I got berated by helicopterdad for even implying that we had guys that were giving less than maximum effort. Well I think that its blatantly obvious to observers that this team has given up from top to bottom. The source of this disease (June) has been eradicated, but the remnants of its influence still linger. The next coach will need to completely churn and burn this roster.

Still not over that loss. Still have no idea how it was lost. Still can hear those freakin Tulsa fans bragging on our way out.
If I can recall correctly, we had the ball first and goal on the 1 and got stopped 4 straight plays. Then, with about a minute to go, Tulsa drove 99 yards and scored a TD for the win as time expired. I am still haunted by it.

The lack of effort is what ultimately bothers the heck out of me. Of course, bad recruiting/JJ, etc, is the ultimate issue but as a former player the lack of effort and competitive PRIDE is the hardest thing to watch for me. And then I just have to stop watching because I can't let myself not get emotional about it.
