Re: Worst-Case Scenario with the Football Program
I don't think SMU will or should drop the program, but I certainly don't think its a given that we have a football program in 10 years.
I think SMU football is at a major crossroads and I'm still not convinced we are fully committed to winning other than monetarily paying a huge chunk of cash for a coach. I just see no real desire to achieve excellence. As we saw with June Jones, SMU is more than willing to reward mediocrity even in the face of blatant disloyalty.

UAB never had a chance. It's run by the University of Alabama - Crimson Tide & Auburn folk who would prefer to not have any local distractions (no matter how minor) divert attention away from their big programs.

I can't believe the school would really give up on the team, but it's hard to believe, based on attendance, that there would be a huge outcry by the alums if the program was dissolved.

Likely true, although the outcry would be deafening to somehow save the tailgating on the Blvd!

Always easier to quit and give up than to buck up, admit your mistakes, and make a real effort to join the big boys.

Send Turner over to TCU or Baylor and they can probably hand him an outline. They seem to have figured it out, SMU not so much.

Ok, Baylor hasn't figured out anything that wasn't handed to them on a silver platter by the Big XII. TCU has done it the hard way, I agree. They are the exception. For those that are not the exeption, please define "real effort" in today's reality of college football. SMU cannot rewrite history, they can only proceed forward. In those terms....please define "real effort".

It has been defined here ad nauseam, I'm sure you can figure it out.
I'm not even arguing with those who think the program will be gone in 10 years or shut down tomorrow. I am simply agreeing with a considerable number of people (many right here on this board) who question the commitment of the school to top flight athletics. Also agree 100% that this football hire will go a long way in answering that question. I hope Morris/Herman/whoever shoots for the moon and we'll see how SMU responds. They should ask for big $ for top flight assistants, an IPF, a training table, extra $ for recruiting, etc, etc, etc. If we land either, and meet their demands, we'll have our answer and be headed in the right direction. If not, expect & enjoy mediocrity and don't complain.

Thank you for finally spelling it out. Too many on this board are vague in what needs to be done. At least you listed some tangible things that could help. I suppose there are more details to follow, hence the "etc. etc. etc."?

If you want more details just guess yourself what a top flight coach might ask in return for his commitment to SMU? As others have mentioned here, SMU may have to overpay and accommodate to get their top guy. This job has many positives and also a substantial list of negatives.
I think Morris or Herman would be home runs but I would suspect they are going to be very pragmatic and interview SMU just as much as they are getting interviewed themselves.
I hope SMU goes all-in for both guys and let the best man win.
Worst-Case Scenario with the Football Program
yep - SMU has been about as clueless as you can be. TCU was a model and very accessible yet they chose to ignore it. But Gary stopped helping usfootballdad wrote:smusportspage wrote:Please define "real effort".

I dont think its sustainable as is. Not enough people care. 3k hard core fans aint going to cut it.

I agree with all this, the verdict is still out with me as well.
And to answer posters below SMT's post regarding RGT'....
Given all that SMU fans have been through over the past 30 years, including 0 championships under Turner's watch, you'd think if he was truly committed to athletics now he would allow MK to play this year. It's good for MK, it's good business for an athletic department burning cash, it's a good faith gesture to LB and if we happen to make a deep run in the NCAA tourney, it's good for admissions.
And yet we have the situation we do.
Speaks volumes to me.

Only problem is what if Turner does want him to but a tenured Prof does not? I do not know any of that to be the case but this could be an instance where Turner could not help even if he wanted to could it not? But yes, I agree, if any way possible, you get the kid on the court now.

Think they'd find a way to get him on the court at Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, Michigan State, UConn, etc?
Irk Brown enough that he throws his hands up and retires and there goes the hoops program!

my biggest fear is we do something to irk Brown eventually. Yes.
