A good defense with quicker defenders is going to shut it down if he can't find a receiver on 25 passing plays a game. Remember Tulsa has one of the worst secondary's in the country and he can't get the ball off in his 3rd year as a College QB
You are such a hypocrite. He is the only division 1 caliber player on this team yet you still find a way to bash him. If this was a thread about him in recruiting you would be making references to all of his offers
Exactly what I was thinking. Stallion sure hates him some Davis. To say this kid can't be very effective in a real spread option offense is to completely ignore what we just witnessed today. Stop with all the complaints about him being the worst passer in the world. Remember, 80% of what he is still trying to run is June's BS offense and he was still trying to complete June's 3 yard outs all day. Yes, he had one bad throw right to the LB on the outside, but other than that you are way off base. He can't find receivers because this scheme sucks as well as 90% of these mighty midgets that can't get open. He's no Johnny Football but if Morris or Herman come to town you can bet he will be our starting QB next year and they will appreciate the opportunity to work with him.
well said - not to mention his 3rd offense in 3 yrs. About to be 4th...

Stallion wrote:No it didn't-the QB just didn't get the ball off in the time he's supposed to. You get the ball out in 3 seconds and you don't have a problem. When you don't get it off in 4 seconds he checks out and just does what he naturally does best-run. You really think Tulsa's defensive rush is better than the other 7 teams we've played?
Davis had maybe at most 2 seconds to make his reads today-pretty hard to make a good read. The o-line broke down all day in protection against a poor d-line pure and simple.

Davis should play the rest of this year so we'll see he much he improves getting all the reps. New coaching staff will also have Nlemchi back next year but we need a stronger OL and stronger/faster WRs

We need taller WRs as well. There are very few good d1 WRs under 6'. P5 WRs look like TE's.

not to look in the rear-view mirror too much, but I wish Justin Willis would have had a shot...even in a June offense. Scattershooting after watching a better effort by the Mustangs

Stallion wrote:My complaint with him is that in his 3rd year as a college QB on about 25 passing plays he didn't know where to throw the ball -that is not acceptable. 3 Turnovers isn't going to win many games either. The offensive line wasn't any worse today than it was in any other game this year. A decent defense will spy the QB and shut down this scrambling. Kid just doesn't know what to do with the ball in the passing game I think he's an NFL athlete without question-at some other position
As has been stated already, he was 21/32 (67%) trying to run June's sh*t short passing scheme with tiny receivers that can't get open, with a weak O-Line. Your '25 passing plays where he didn't know where to the throw the ball' argument literally makes no sense. 3rd year QB????? 1 year at A&M getting limited backup practice reps behind Manziel, absolutely zero game reps; one year at a crappy juco (with coaching worse than an average Texas high school), and a few crappy reps thrown into the fire against Baylor & A&M.....and that somehow equates to a 3rd year college QB? That's quite a stretch don't you think? I'm not saying he's next year's AAC player of the year, but you're arguments really seem to twist reality.

You can be sure the new staff will figure out a way to get Sutton and Gaines in the mix and send the majority of these guys to the bench. Halverson & DJ can be legit possession type receivers. Figure out if Ingram or somebody else who supposedly has real 4.3-4.4 speed can be your stretch the field guys.

No sense? When is the last time you saw a Run N Shoot QB run 28 times? I'll wait. Take 28 runs and subtract the very few called running plays-whatever it was. HE HAS 4 RECEIVERS in this offense. Tulsa was 1-7 No. 109 in Pass Defense. No. 106 is Sacks. The reason you guys think the offensive line was so bad is because he didn't get rid of the ball on time.

You are the master of holding to outdated opinions. Davis is BY FAR the best we have.

He was 21/32, yes or no????? You think the O-Line played well????? In some twisted June Jones bizarro world I guess you could make yourself believe that. Since in June's version of an offense, every O-Lineman should be a pass blocking All-American, and the QB should never get sacked, since the QB is required to take 1 or 2 quick steps back and fire 1-3 yard outs & curls in rhythm in less than 2 seconds!!!!

Davis gives us the best opportunity to win and he had a good game today, I am with everyone on that argument.
However, to Stallion's point, if you watch the game on film, Davis has great escapability but he also moves himself into trouble. I wasn't at the game, so I don't know if he had players running open or not, but he pulls the ball down pretty quickly and if there is even a sniff of a problem in the pocket, he pulls his eyes down and starts to run unless he knows he is on the same side of the field as the RB.
The line wasn't nearly the jailbreak it was against Baylor.

I'd rather have my qb rush for 180 plus yards than a bunch of certain sacks any day. Take a look at the similar stats Boykin put up tonite a la what Davis did today.

Common theme is low talent levels not strength and conditioning. The team has had the same strength and conditioning coach for the last few years and you have not complained. This is on bad recruiting period no matter how you try to deflect the blame.
We all know your reading comprehension skills are poor, so I'll try to help you out. The point that was made was that the players who returned on the o-line who started and were decent by the end of last year have played significantly worse this season. I added to that perspective that the returning players on the d-line are also significantly worse than last season. The implication is that if it was just the o-line regressing, you could blame Suan. However, because the problem is there on both sides of the line, it is quite probable that there is something else wrong. My suggestion is that the strength and conditioning program is one major thing that both position sets rely heavily on. We can all see players who weren't pushed around as much last year are getting blasted this season. There has to be a reason fr it. I hope that helps. It is really unsettling how poor the Mississippi school system is.

I'm not going to criticize our offensive line. We had 21 first downs and 464 yards total offence, including 252 yards rushing. We averaged 5.9 yards per carry and put up 28 points without much help from the defence, who didn't really give us much help in terms of field position or force any turnovers.
Our defence gave up 26 first downs and 501 yards in total offence. We have more serious issues than the offensive line, which is improving each week.

If only every team we played was as bad as Tulsa we would have a great offense......although we still lost.
