I would hope that by now our AD (via his search firm) has been in touch with the agent of each possible candidate to measure their interest. This should result in a short list of 'interested' candidates that can be interviewed as soon as they are available the end of this month or early next.

Unfortunately, it seems like there might be a lot of coaching opportunities open up at the end of the season which will just make it more difficult for us. I am afraid this could be a long and drawn out process before we have our new coach.

I noticed the DMN projection had Clemson playing Alabama on New Years Day in the Orange Bowl but anyway on January 1. Apparently that comes from an Orange Bowl website that projects opponents. I had hoped Clemson would not be in a high profile Bowl so Morris might be available earlier. Guess they project Clemson to climb. Actually I guess its because they think Fla St will be in the playoff and Clemson will take the ACC bid

[quote="Stallion"]Does anybody know whether SMU plans to zero in on a single Coaching candidate after doing their due diligence or whether they plan to come to say a final 3 and then interview each and then make a choice. Knowing SMU I fear the first option. I'd personally like the committee to get a first hand look at say Chad Morris, Philip Montgomery, Tom Herman and Lincoln Riley etc. I still don't understand why no one mentions Montgomery. Maybe the interview process might demonstrate the reason but on paper he is the Top Coordinator with more experience, calling plays for the top offense in the country over several years. He coaches at a private school and has years of Texas experience. You got to interview him[/quote

I, as well as others, have mentioned Montgomery a number of times.

A high profile bowl won't restrict Morris' availability. He'll start interviewing after the South Carolina game and he'll take some job before the bowl. In all likelihood he won't even coach the bowl.

Only bowls that will prevent a coach from interviewing are the playoffs. I can't see a head coach allowing staff to take a job before playoffs are over. So if you want Doug Meachum, you need to root for TCU to lose (or maybe Minnesota). There is no way Patterson lets staff interview, much less take a job, before TCU is out of playoff hunt.

I can definitely see a HC allowing a coach to take a job and then giving them the option to leave and start the new job or do both jobs until the game is over. It's happened a few times in the past with coordinators in the title game. Say you want Tom Herman and Ohio State is in the playoff, back in 2008 Urban Meyer let his OC Dan Mullen interview for the Mississippi State job and when he got it Mullen did both jobs through the title game.

actually the later the hire and the later the bowl the less it affects the new school since the Dead Period lasts basically-not exactly -from just before Christmas until after the National Championship. So if you hire someone at the start of December he definitely needs to move on to new school and start recruiting. If the Dead Period has already started then not as much of a necessity.

We are talking about Patterson who goes out of his way to be constantly pissed off and feel slighted. He isn't going to allow that.

Dead Period:

December 15, 2014 through January 14, 2015: [applicable to all prospective student-athletes (see Bylaw 13.02.5.5.2):

dead period is a period of time when it is not permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts or evaluations on or off the institution's campus or to permit official or unofficial visits by prospective student-athletes to the institution's campus. The provision of complimentary admissions to a prospective student-athlete during a dead period is prohibited, except as provided in Bylaw 13.7.2.5 for a prospective student-athlete who visits an institution as part of a group. During a dead period, a coaching staff member may not serve as a speaker at or attend a meeting or banquet at which prospective student-athletes are in attendance per Bylaw 13.1.8.1, and may not visit a prospective student-athlete's educational institution. It remains permissible, however, for an institutional staff member to write or telephone a prospective student-athlete. (Revised 1/11/94)

In that event (if it is indeed true) then we'll just move on to the next guy.
