DMN: Has SMU's quarterback carousel finally come to a halt?

Postby Water Pony » Thu Nov 13, 2014 8:58 am

"Few things can derail an offense more than instability at quarterback. The entire offense must adapt to changes in packages that fit the new guy behind center."

DMN's Bill Nichols reports Matt Davis is expected to provide much needed stability for offense. Since Gilbert went down during USF game last year, we have lost every game.

“You look at the teams that are winning at a high level across the country, they’ve all got good quarterbacks,” Mason said. “Quarterbacks are what make the team go, and so you’ve got to fit your offense to what your quarterback can do. I think that’s where a lot of guys miss the boat in college football.”

After 6 years he finally gets it?

June Jones still doesn't get it.

Mason had no say in the O until this year. tiki is the one that refused to change.

Agreed, but why did Mason keep his mouth shut and it had to be the defense that carried us to bowl games instead of June's "high powered dynamic offense"?

Because June Jones is a self proclaimed offensive football guru. Why would he think that a mere defensive coach would know more about quarterbacking then he does?

So Mason does actually get it but unfortunately too little, too late. Hopefully we'll see the offense continue to 'evolve' under Davis but I doubt they do enough to really make a difference. Only wholesale changes to the scheme and a major shuffling of personnel will be enough to convert losses to wins. Not to mention the defense and special teams. If nothing else, Davis gets some reps & confidence going into the off-season and the players & new staff have something to build on for next year.

unfortunately we all know that it is not realistic to make wholesale changes to the O after the season has started. I am glad that Mason has made the changes that he has but it is really too little, too late.

Nothing could have saved this season so it isn't too little too late but that said Davis should have been starting earlier just from the energy he brings.

A. June was the boss.

B. Last year he had Mumme and Gilbert to make it work, and it was the O covering for the D

So it took the coaches half a year to figure out Matt Davis is a good zone read ground attack quarterback? It took me about 3 seconds to figure out the same thing from watching his HS highlights. It is a coaching fail to not be able to adapt to your players. So Davis can't run an offense and doesn't have a golden arm like Garret Gilbert? Well, why don't you adapt your offense to take advantage of the skills you have, especially when a running QB is by far the best athlete on the team. The coaches have to adapt to the players because not all players have the skills to adapt to the coaches.

Seems like every thread had a TCU comparison in it, so why not this one? Andy Dalton is the polar opposite of Trevone Boykin but both QBs won a lot of games.... because the coaches adapted the offenses to the players skills, not the other way around.

Would love to see 15-20 actual zone-read plays this week. Doubt it will happen, but that one play could really help put a defense on its heels and show a real commitment to changing the O.

Failing to adapt his offense to the players (or modern defenses) was the hallmark of June Jones' offense.
