Here's the thing with the whole "we beat TCU and then hosted UCF and nobody showed" argument for me: there were two main things conspiring against attendance that day IMO. First, the Rangers were playing to go to the World Series for the first time in 75 years at a time that conflicted with the UCF game. Not a great excuse, but it leads into reason #2 which is that the TCU victory felt like a fluke win and not the beginning of a trend of SMU resurgence (which sadly turned out to be painfully true). You're not going to pack a stadium when you have 1 signature win in 7 years bracketed by perpetual [deleted] kickings by other P5 teams. Dallas fans define fair weather for the most part and do not come out to support mediocre, and the win over TCU did not prove enough to the average fan that we had turned a corner. Turns out they were more right than most of us realized, and this year we feel the full brunt of their foresight. Hopefully a new coach can turn that corner and we will see what our attendance can really be. C'mon in Chad and get it done!
+1, Do fans ever get tired of hearing the beatching about the UCF game that year? Your explanation is very valid and very appropriate.
Hell, I remember saying to my friend before the game that I thought we needed to win one more game before fans would come (I believe we were ranked #27 in the AP at the time). Unfortunately, I never got to find out if my theory was accurate..
