AAC Expansion PossibilitiesWith all of the speculation on access to P5 I think the realistic lot of us here know that the best and most realistic hope for SMU moving forward is a strong, vibrant, and relevant American Athletic Conference. I don't think there will be any poaching of schools anytime soon from the P5 but what the American can do that the other G5 conferences can't is continue to build its brand and gain more respect on the national stage. I think the best way to do this is through expansion to create a true national conference that would make the American the undisputed leader among the G5 in both football and basketball. I support a 16 team four pod system that would cut down on travel costs and allow for fans of the conference to watch games from 10AM through midnight every weekend.
WEST - Boise State, BYU, Colorado State, Air Force SOUTHWEST- SMU, Houston, Tulsa, Memphis SOUTHEAST - Tulane, Central Florida, South Florida, East Carolina NORTHEAST - Cincinnati, UCONN, Temple, Navy If you can't get Boise to cooperate given their sweetheart deal with the MWC then you could roll with one of the CA schools although budget concerns make them less enticing. You could make an argument for UNLV for TV market and basketball as well. Either way, I think this is the best longterm option for SMU. Thoughts? Back off Warchild seriously.
Re: AAC Expansion PossibilitiesUNLV has to be in there. Wish we could cut Tulane loose
Re: AAC Expansion PossibilitiesWell, it did work for the longevity of the WAC, after all.....
Re: AAC Expansion PossibilitiesStrong and vibrant would be nice. Having a ranked team would also be nice.

Re: AAC Expansion PossibilitiesSMU's best option is a P5 conference.
Re: AAC Expansion PossibilitiesWow such piercing, perceptive and intellectual commentary there.

Re: AAC Expansion PossibilitiesApparently it would be our best option

Re: AAC Expansion PossibilitiesI think we should politely decline a P5 offer. Thanks but no thanks.

Re: AAC Expansion PossibilitiesSMT said the "best longterm option" was an expanded AAC to which I replied with P5 being our real best option. Did you forget to wear your reading glasses, Stallion?
Re: AAC Expansion Possibilities
Any idiot who can tie his shoes knows that any G5 program's best longterm option is P5. The reality is that is unlikely. Could it happen? Maybe. So many variables have to go in our favor for that to even be on the radar. For the next 5-10 years SMU needs to focus on making the American a great "challenger" conference. Back off Warchild seriously.
Re: AAC Expansion Possibilities
I agree with you and agreed with your first post, just pointed that out. In our near future our focus should be to help lift the AAC. If we do get a better contract (10m per yr or example) I would not feel bad for us being in the AAC.
Re: AAC Expansion PossibilitiesThe conference will never sniff $10/M but I do think we could renegotiate to 4-5M in a few years if the league improves.
Back off Warchild seriously.
