Best Weekend Ever!

Postby RE Tycoon » Mon Oct 10, 2005 12:07 am

I just got back from Houston after watching my beloved 'Stros send Atlanta home for the second consecutive year (It was exhausting to watch in person, and I'll say it; inings 10 through 17 were kinda boring, but what a finsh!). The hacks over at ESPN are debating if todays game was the best playoff game over, I think so, but my baseball watching knowledge is limited to 24 years so I will let others debate those silly subjects....

Anyways, I was shocked and happy as hell to hear that SMU beat UAB as I was walking out of Saturday nights game in Houston. My favorite baseball team had just won and my 'Stangs won as well. From what I've read in the last few minutes it seems that the team finally had a game on the road where everything came together, I have no idea what team will show up Saturday, but I can't wait to find out. If anyone has an idea on where I can snag a DVD of this wonderful game please shoot me an email.

Give the Co-ards hell 'Stros...

GO 'STANGS!

I tried to make it up to my kids tonight. Not a very good Dad this weekend! Ran back and forth to computer and TV last night. Almost turned off All Access when we failed on the 4th down, but thought...just in case. Bobby Leach and Michael Bowen all over again!

On the couch from about 1 to 7 eastern today. This makes up so much for the Braves-Astros extra inning loss in 99. (Next to last game played at the Astrodome ever) and of course 86 against the Mets!

Fabulous sports weekend. Maybe best ever! Glad to know there are so many Astros fans on this board. I've been long suffering since 1969.. Current STUDent added to the list of myself, Hoofbeat 83, Nacho and king of the avatars, SMOO POWER! I'm sure there are many more!

And of course, congrats again to the Ponies! It doesn't get any better than winning with time expired!

amen brother!

ponies win! astros win (twice)! and (for me) longhorns win! all in very important games, relative to each team. this was my trifecta.

as someone who wonders why i even bother sometimes, this weekend is what keeps me going.

now if the astros can just exorcise another devil: the st. louis cardinals.

like i told you yesterday CS, i'm just going to relax in the cards series, not stress out. it worked at the TCU game and look what happened (as if the players really know whether or not i'm stressed out and that affects their play...duh).

Born and raised in Houston. I'm a diehard Houston sports fan. To quote longtime Houston Rockets announcer Gene Peterson: "How sweet it is!" It's about time the Houston sports fan get to experience a win like this. Over the years we've had our hearts broken by the Stro's, Oilers, Rockets, Phi-Slamma Jamma etc............

I also couldn't believe the SMU-UAB score. SMU should be 4-2 or 5-1. This team is the Cybill of college football. Right now I wouldn't be suprised if the Mustangs won out or didn't win another game for the rest of the season.

The only thing I know about SMU this season is that Bobby Chase is nails. And we need everyone of our players to channel this guy's heart and attitude. He brings it every weekend. After Chase's college career is over I wouldn't be surprised if some how willed himself on to the roster of an NFL team as a posession reciever. He's my favorite Mustang of all time.

I noticed that you left out the Rice Owls in your listing of Houston teams. Intentional or not? Remember: we play them for SMU Homecoming!

Rice never broke my heart. I think Rice has broken the hearts of some of my Owl buddies. But I have to admit I did like watching Trevor Cobb and Bert Emanuel as a kid. I think Cobb won the Doak Walker Award.

I put Phi Slamma Jamma on the list because my uncles are Cougar alums and they remember the UNC, NC State, and Georgetown games. They still talk about the Louisville game as the best college bball game they ever saw. A couple of years ago I read that game changed the way college b-all was played. Anyway, I was like 3 or 4 years old during that era. But thanks to ESPN classic I'm well aware of the history.

I'm going to try and make it to homecoming this year. I haven't been back since I graduated. I'm pulling for PB he needs 4-6 wins to get recruiting going again. Next year I expect a bowl berth.

Anyone remember the Houston Buffs or the oilers playing in the hs stadium? The you aren't old as dirt. How about the Colt 45s or Charlie Tolar? George Blanda in an Oiler uniform? Ever see the construction of th Astrodome? We can talk if you have seen any of those.

I remember the 45s and Blanda as an Oiler. I remember the bright sun through the top of the Astrodome and the outfileders losing the ball. Then the paint, then the dead grass, and presto....Astroturf. Of course the best game I ever attended there was the '68 Bluebonnet bowl where we beat Oklahoma. I was sitting on about the 5 yard line at the end that Oklahoma tried the last second field goal. I thought it was good until I realized the cheering fans in the end zone were SMUites.

You have just mentioned my all-time favorite SMU game. That was greatness and the clincher that I would attend SMU. We had by that time moved to the Dallas area so I wasn't able to attend in person but I did watch it at my grandmother's in east Texas on a grainy old black and white tv. A wonderful memory.

The Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl was the game that hooked me on football. I remember watching it as an 8 year old (wasn't it on New Year's Eve?)and we held on at the end. It was on TVS (old sports network that broadcast various bowl games, SWC basketball on Saturday afternoons in the 70's etc.) My parents were visiting friends and we watched the end of the game at their house in Commerce, Texas. I remember right before that last second field goal try, that a caption came up on the television that said, "This is Tense". Must have been some bored board director with a "character generator" that he wanted to try out.
