uhhh, we did not need the timeouts. We just needed to not field a punt inside our 5 that was clearly going touchback, needed not to drop a sure pick six, and needed to make just one play in the final 10 minutes.

This game was so painful to watch from start to finish, I was telling my nephew that I wish they would outlaw all timeouts and just go to continuous clock time like soccer.

The game blew, and I was at least thankful that they pocketed the timeouts.

Maybe a timeout on defense to slow things down. Or see their formation on 4th down and call TO to prepare the D. Or before the last PAT...make him think about it.

yeah maybe, but they need to just go with soccer rules. Would have saved us the misery.

That would put a cherry on this season. Spend all three timeouts to freeze the kicker on a PAT.

Not to be a super pessimist, but USF essentially tried to give the game to us. They stopped running it down our throats in the 1st quarter when they were getting 7 per carry. They turned the ball over on an important drive. They had 23 chop block penalties. And we still gave it back.

That fielded punt on the 2 was very special. Middle school players near us were shaking their heads.

That was to set up the fake punt statute of limitations type 2 long bomb on 1st down Carlos has been working on.

There was no reason not to see there formation on 4th and call time out. Esp with our secondary scrambling to find their assignments. Also, could have told the secondary they had the option to foul if beat. They were already on the one. This is getting laughable.

That was my thinking as well. Why not use a timeout. And I would have done it on the PAT...that guy had to be nervous.

you for sure call it before that last play and make sure you are set - although it is worked anyway everyone would be saying you had a better chance not giving them time to figure out a play.

THe push off was a hard pill to swallow also - if we ever deserved a cal…...

Did everyone notice how the QB was signaling to spike the ball to stop the clock before the 4th down play? That would have been a Godsend.

I was going back and forth during the last drive whether using timeouts was a good idea. I had zero confidence in our offense's ability to put together a last minute drive a la the UAB game years ago. Calling a timeout arguably helped USF. I think I would have called timeout the last drive the first incomplete pass after they crossed midfield to settle everyone down. I also may have called timeout at the end when it became clear they were going to get a play off on 4th down and goal. I would want to make sure everyone understood what to do and get the right personnel on the field.

But that is in hindsight and not under heavy fire like Mason was.
