Question on UAB game and Copeland/Bennett......if that last second pass had been batted down by UAB, would you be calling for the heads of Bennett and Copeland this week? If I was in your shoes, I don't know how I would answer that question. Of course, you always want your school to win, but it really shows how one play can change your outlook on a team, coach, AD, etc. I've had my doubts about Patterson but he just keeps managing to squeek out big wins.
What a huge win for you guys!!
the sky is falling crowd had some pretty good ammunition. Those 3 previous games were not pretty and the criticism was very well deserved. I do think that Bennett should be given to the end of the season before any decisions are made though-and I thought that last week too.
Stallion's right, though I would have said no decisions until after the Rice game.
Re: Question on UAB game and Copeland/Bennett...
Copeland aka Copeland should still think about retiring early. Lots of prior mistakes with coaches, fan accomodations, and marketing. Frawgs are FW's college home team, but smu is either homeless, or shut ins. Canning a perennial top 10 track team before raising the RED FLAG to the general SMU alumni during "THE COMMITMENT" is for most of us the deciding last straw.
Can you honestly say you miss the track team? I mean sure they were great and all, but how many guys named Lars that swing a hammer can you really care about. I know we were successful at it but it might as well have been the chess team. We did not even have a decent sprint team that would have helped with the football team recruiting. Also - you have to pay for them plus an entire other womens team if you keep them.
You can complain about some of Copelands decisions but this is not one of them. Until we get some money from our "revenue sports" it will stay tough. If we an afford a non revenue team it ought to be baseball - at least there is a shot more then 100 would show up for a baseball game.
All I know is that I'm at least a quarter Swedish. I have blue eyes, and I
DID finish the full 26.2 Cowtown Marathon ?? years ago. Used to play chess every day at lunch with a former football coach turned software engineer while programming software for manufacturing a fighter plane at a DFW defense factory. Also organized (manage/recruit), and coached CO-ED volley ball teams to the play-offs at the company rec center every season.
If Chase had dropped the catch then Bennett would have to explain why he didn't go for 2 early in the 4th quarter up by 5.
SMU was down by 5 with 3 seconds to go and the ball on the 31. If they had made the 2 pointer they would have trailed by 3 and probably would have gone for the FG to tie the game and send it into OT. It was very significant to go for one (and miss it BTW) instead of 2. Chase made the catch and no one has complained except me about that play. If SMU had lost it would be topic one and Bennett would be roasted for it. He really needs to have a conversion chart.
I have made several mentions of the lack of the 2 point attempt, although technically they did try since there was a botched snap. What I do not like is everyone talking about what would ahve happened if Chase had dropped the ball on the last play. He did not drop it, he caught it. After the Marshal game I believe I was the first to say lets not use the bad call by the officials as an excuse. We should have been in position where one call does not make or break. Well the opposite is true. Sunshine or no sunshine, the catch was made, we did win and now we can move on to ECU and hopefully start a winning streak.
I am consistent! Fire Copeland right now. I don't go watch Tennis, Golf and Volleyball but I do not want to see the programs go away.
While track is not a spectator sport, it has some benefit to all programs. You think Baylor didn't mind the hype it got at the last summer Olympics for their American born runners. Despite the fact we had a number of swimmers competing, didn't hear the word SMU mentioned. And in football, there are some wide-outs who ran track in HS and want to continue in that sport in college. By not having Men's track, these recruits go elsewhere. The same could be said to a lesser degree of baseball. Also, have you noticed that when the men left the track team, the women's team performance dropped. Perhaps its because we had so many brother/sister, husband/wife throwers. Now they'll go elsewhere as well.
I hear what you are saying about track ES.
I would love to see baseball back at SMU but I don't think we will see it now or maybe forever. We would have to start up a women's softball team also. Not likely due to expenses. Regarding socccer they need to do something with that stadium. It is an eyesore. Mr Hunt who lives for soccer could have the Hunt Soccer Field or some such. The chain link fence needs to come down and a permanent wall erected. I'm not talking about a $30 million project. Just some touches to make it look more presentable.
