Re: OT - Article on KliffHiring a guy without much experience to run a P5 program is a huge risk. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: OT - Article on KliffThis year is a setback but I wouldn't count him out. A lot of the problems this year resulted from strategic mistakes made by the prior staff in recruiting in the Defensive Line. Its ridiculous to be in a situation where you have to go out and sign 5 JUCO Defensive linemen. Pressurre is building though for a successful 2015 season or he may not recover

Re: OT - Article on KliffI still think he will be successful in the long run. Gotta give the guy a chance
Re: OT - Article on Kliff
Kind of like when Mississippi St hired Dan Mullen and when Vandy hired James Franklin. #HammerDown
Re: OT - Article on KliffKliff has only recently been honest with himself regarding the talent he has on the defensive side of the ball. He's guilty of falling in love with his players instead of rationally evaluating what he has. So when the defense sucks, what does he do? Fire the coach. I think they've had seven defensive coordinators in the last six years so the problem goes back longer than Kliff has been there. Fast forward to the 2015 recruiting season and their recruiting is completely lopsided towards the offense... Again. They only have 3 defensive players committed so far in 2015. Tech needs to bring a boatload of juco defenders in and this late in the season, most will be spares.
Re: OT - Article on Kliff
Notice that I did not write "head coaching experience." Before they got those jobs, Franklin had 15 years coaching experience and Mullen had 14 years experience. Kingsbury had about 5 years experience. Clearly a gifted OC, he missed out on 10 years of "experience." They worked on a number of staffs and for a number of programs. He worked for Sumlin at two programs. With more experience, he would may have handled the Mayfield situation better. With a larger network of coaches that he worked with, he might have avoided hiring the drunk guy as his DC. Last edited by Digetydog on Tue Nov 18, 2014 8:18 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Re: OT - Article on Kliff
So I guess those 5 Juco D Lineman must have really sucked since they've made ZERO difference for the Tech D? Thought Juco's are supposed to be more seasoned, more mature, immediate difference makers?
Re: OT - Article on Kliff
Stallion above, says he did exactly that last year with 5 Juco DLinemen. Didn't help one bit, defense actually worse this year. Maybe he's just not that good at evaluating talent?
Re: OT - Article on Kliffas we've seen when your roster depth is lopsided and missing returning veterans you can not solve those issues in 1 recruiting class. He only had a short time to recruit the Class of 2013-those kids are Sophomores and redshirt freshman this year. Most every good program-except K-State-uses JUCOs to fill roster gaps-not recruit 5 JUCOs in the Defensive Line in one year. That's a recipe for disaster. The 2014 Class recruits are true freshman. Recruit well and count to 3 or 4. Still counting...

Re: OT - Article on Kliff
Still doesn't answer the question......why haven't 5 Juco DLinemen helped the defense at all? They were all at least 3 star guys with experience who you'd think would have come in and made a difference, no? Main reason I ask is because there are a lot of SMU fans who think the new coach is going to go on a Juco binge to somehow save our roster.
Re: OT - Article on KliffI've commented on this many times through the years. It seems too many JUCOs are always given that 3 star when hardly any of the analysts at rivals/Scout know a thing about these recruits.
I've tried to tell a lot of these SMU fans that its not practical to expect much help from JUCOs this year because the last day to visit is December 15 and signing date is December 17. They might pick up some help with the spring JUCO crop but those guys are pretty picked over and much more likely to be academic risks. Plus now they have to have a 2.5 GPA and meet required core requirements rather than 2.0 GPA while loading up on PE classes. I'm not expecting much JUCO help. I think its essential to be able to fill gaps with JUCOs but again I think signing a bunch is a recipe for disaster. Jucos should be gap-fillers not relied upon to remodel an entire position. Most take their first half of their Junior year to just adjust to Division 1A KK in his first full recruiting class was faced with the loss of 3 starting defensive line and another significant contributing lettermen. He thought he had no choice-can't play in Big 12 with true freshman. I think one didn't qualify. He probably was a little desperate. They were exposed against Arkansas. In any event, the issue stems from the prior coach. Its kind of like the situation at Oline, RB and QB for SMU. Recruiting mistakes made 2-3 years ago by June Jones come back to bite him in the butt. Our next coach ain't going to solve those problems for at least 2-3 years either "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

Re: OT - Article on Kliff
He's just clueless when it comes to defense. He's a glorified offensive coordinator.
Re: OT - Article on KliffI think the lesson learned on KK is his inability to develop a quality staff. He just hasn't coached long enough to be around enough quality coaches he could bring with him.
That's his week link. Look at Mullin, Sumlin , Briles ect. When they were promoted to HC they had been to a number of places and met and seen quality coaches whom they could call and bring onto a staff. That's going to be our HC big challenge - bring on a quality staff. Pony 81
Re: OT - Article on KliffWho gives a flying [deleted] ?!? It's kk and tortilla tech. I hope they suck [deleted] for years ... Same goes for whorns, ATM, horny toads, whack offs, and cougar high. To hell with all of them.
