Godfather on Turner-administrationModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Godfather on Turner-administrationHoopmanx... is there any sign of progress with the administration? Even if it is slow? If this is not the case then why do we bother being fans. You know what they say about the definition of insanity

If that is what happen than that is really bad. "We will play man to man and we will pick you up at the airport." - Larry Brown

Re: Godfather on Turner-administrationDon't know if this happened or not, but I would be shocked if true. I've worked for plenty of universities over the years and the only reason to retroactively adjust transfer work already on a student record is usually due to a new transcript from the original school coming in. If the transfer policy changes at a school, they don't go back and re-evaluate work already posted. Can't see any reason for SMU to do that. what a happy little FB/BB record this school has over the last 25 years! pass the rainbows and unicorns C-ya @ Milos!
Re: Godfather on Turner-administrationSeriously....this is pretty funny. SMU hasn't had a functioning football team in decades (excluding a few years of fairy dust where we bought in to a scheme that eventually depleted any chance of actual talent being recruited), hasn't had a successful athletic department since the mid 1990's (our overall program used to be respected...), and yet still people follow closely and care. That is the mark of an academic institution that endears an emotional bond.
So we have some athlete parents who care as much about being a [deleted] as being a supporter of their kid (heaven forbid parents support their kids over a school...especially one that has a well developed recent history of sucking). So this means any valid points they make are overshadowed by their trolling. So we have others who fixate on one aspect or another of the program or school and support them no matter how bad their impact on the overall situation. So we have a few who are basically [deleted] who just want to rile up anyone they can because the only think in their life that retains any meaning or value is currently worth the [deleted] stuck on the bottom of someones shoe. We still have people who care, and we have a chance, and with that chance we could have a future. I can't wait to finally get back to visit Dallas this Christmas, get a ticket for a basketball game where I will be more than 1 of 45 in attendance (unlike when I last attended a game back in 2001), walk around campus, and think about what was and what could be. I might even know who our next football coach is by then. Our basketball team may even still be ranked in the top 200. Either way, I will still be proud and I will still expect more. More from the administration, more from the athletic department, more from the coaches, and more from the teams. I know that someday soon, like once or twice in the history of my marriage, I will be able to look at my wife and tell her that we beat TCU in every sport worth a damn that school year.....and that SMU still has better academics and better looking girls than TCU (her aside, of course!).
Re: Godfather on Turner-administrationI think we need a clarification from Professor X
OK I bet there is a germ of truth to this but I also bet its actually an NCAA rule. Its appears there is a difference between what credits are required for admission and your first two years after admission than there is required by the start of your 3rd year. In your 3rd year you are expected to declare a major and after that you only count credits earned in your designated degree. Here is a UCLA explanation of NCAA rules but honestly I haven't figured out if UCLA rules are exactly the same as NCAA rules. Trying to tie this to an NCAA standard but I suspect this is the issue. I'm focusing on the following excerpt but you probably need to read the rest to undertand During the first two years – All units acceptable toward any of UCLA’s degree programs are considered degree applicable for the purposes of satisfying the 6, 8, 27 and 36-unit rules. By the beginning of a student-athlete’s third year – Only units applied towards a student’s designated degree are considered degree applicable for the purposes of satisfying the 6, 8 and 27-unit rules and 40/60/80 degree percentage rule. Units that exceed a student’s elective count are not considered degree applicable once a student enters their third year. Look at the last sentence about electives not considered degree applicable once student enters their third year. Isn't that pretty much what RGV is describing http://www.uclabruins.com/ViewArticle.d ... =209045774 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OK I definitely believe the rule is an NCAA rule not just a UCLA rule. The NCAA Manual is very hard to review online-my computer always freezes up. But here is an NCAA compliance site that has an example which discusses the change in calculation of degree requirements at the start of your 3rd year. In short, you can't use excess electives but must calculate based on courses required by your designated degree. The applicable excerpt is: (b) By the beginning of the third year of enrollment (fifth semester or seventh quarter), a student-athlete shall be required to have designated a program of studies leading toward a specific baccalaureate degree. From that point, the credits used to meet the progress-toward-degree requirements must be degree credit toward the student’s designated degree program; http://dailycomplianceitem.wordpress.co ... e-program/ Last edited Today 10:07 PM by PonyExpress "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: Godfather on Turner-administrationSMU should've gotten MK eligible at all costs.
The fact that he isn't playing tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about our commitment to athletic success, or the lack thereof. With MK we beat Indiana on the road.
Re: Godfather on Turner-administrationI don't know the details, but didn't MK play last year and maintain his eligibility by SMU standards for both the fall and spring semester? Could one speculate that MK knew what was expected and has proven he can make the grades and play?
Or did Turner and the administration change eligiblity requirements starting this fall? Yes, SMU does things a little differnt. Good! MOst atheletes at SMU will be professionals insomething other than sports and the reputation of a degree from SMU is an edge. Even for athletes. Will Brown hit the road because of this? Who knows. But he has succeeded beyond expectations preforming within the SMU rules thus far. Brown impresses me as one that says this is what is expeced to perform and we will do what we need to do to meet those expectations. Not cut and run.

Re: Godfather on Turner-administration
A 'little' different, you kidding me? 0-50-1 against Big12 South in FB 20+ years & counting without a tourney bid, that means 20+ years without being a Top 65 BB program RGT is 0-40 winning conference championships against less than stellar conference opponents And all this coming from a player who played at the highest levels because we DIDN'T do things differently. I don't get it. Oh, and if LB walks because of this, its over at this school in terms of athletics.
Re: Godfather on Turner-administration
So, your point is? That I was paid? That I was given grades just to play football? That somehow my playing sports eliminated my need to meet certain academic standards? Or is it that I am just too Darn stupid to accomplish minimal academic standards just because I was an athlete? And yes we did do things differently. We had a brain Coach (Coach Phil Barr,Coach Mike Barr's Perdue football playing brother). We had to produce attendence cards and report our grades through the semester. If we did't meet academic standards, there were consequences. And yes we had kids dismissed from the team cause of poor academic standards. The results are interesteing. Off the 1980 top 20 team, five players went on to become physicains. That is a pretty successful ratio of MDs to the football team population. Greater than 5 % which is much higher than the MD to general population ratio. One would hope that the general assumption that the winning Pony Express teams were more than just high paid bugger eating morons whose only goal was to meet fans expectations of winning.
