Alternative viewpoint. JJ's system actually works...
Oh give it a f*cking rest already. The guy was a fraud. We won a handful of games each year against crap competition with maybe 1 or two legit wins in his 6 years. We are worse now than we were before he came. Only thing that changed was SMU's commitment to being better.

I think he's rightly seen as a quick fix type who can do a lot with lesser talent.

Mouse davis football doesn't work anymore especially if you don't recruit an nfl line and qb.

ponyboy wrote:Let me spell this out. JJ has an odd system. He used that odd system, both on the talent acquisition front and on the football field, to dramatically turn around both UH and SMU. During his fourth season here at SMU, the 2011 season, tensions with the SMU administration mounted, I am guessing around the support structures for SMU student athletes. By December, he had an out to a PAC12 school -- and planned to take that out. SMU was slightly surprised, but also a bit relieved. When that fell through, both hands were forced and we started to play Mexican Standoff, a game that would last all the 2012, 2013 seasons, ending when SMU finally gave in and paid JJ off in the early part of the 2014 season. He hasn't engaged in active talent acquisition since that 2011 class.
Blame JJ? Maybe. Blame the SMU administration? Maybe. But that's what happened. He brought about two unbelievably dramatic transformations, back to back. No reason to believe he couldn't do it again.
I think you are engaging in some re-constructionist history, Jones was not going to get concited criminals into SMU like he did at Hawaii. Jones himself never engaged in active recruiting. SMU did not give in to Jones and pay him off. They made him sign a extension that he did not want to sign with an easy buyout clause. Last, Jones resigned after one of the most embarrassing losses in SMU history at UNT.

He authored unbelievable turnarounds at both Hawaii and SMU. You willing to just throw that out?

So why didn't they want him?

Won't be a problem at UNLV.

He authored the worst team in college football in his 7th year. After the UNT loss even you were saying that it was time for him to go.

If a well-known and respected contractor builds a beautiful house for you but there is a fight about how the living room will be laid out and in the end he burns it down instead of giving you the keys, do you throw out everything that happened before he did it?
Alternatively, if you make a ton of money on Enron stock and then it starts to wobble in the early 2000s, do you keep holding it based on past results? No, you recognize the fraud and move on as a better investor for the experience.
I don't care what June did here. The way he left it says everything about the type of coach and person he is. He doesn't deserve any defense from SMU fans.

I think we should tell any school that is interested in this charlatan to check out our record this year and last. Check out our recruiting the last couple of years.
And also they might want to talk to some of the major boosters at ASU as to why they refused to permit the school to hire him.
Perhaps we can help them to their dd.

Let's say for a second that ponyboy is correct and that June is a football genius. The way he sandbagged the last three years here should be enough to where no one would ever want to hire him.

Re: Alternative viewpoint. JJ's system actually works...
Anybody who thinks I'm defending Jones is dead wrong. I am trying to have a conversation about a topic that I believe most people have wrong. Here's my point:
June Jones did amazing turnaround jobs at Hawaii and SMU. Was it sheer dumb luck? I don't think so, but ok maybe. Was it using other's recruits? Ok, maybe. Would he probably do it again at UNLV. Yes.
Other points:
JJ may be evil.
JJ may deserve hanging.
JJ may have very poor taste in neckwear and attire in general.
I don't care about the other points. My ONLY point is that he turned Hawaii around and he turned SMU around and would probably do the same at UNLV or wherever he ends up. However he did it, it's probably repeatable.

What if it were at least partially our fault that he sandbagged?
