Gary Patterson on ESPN Radio Last NightI was flipping through the channels last night on my way home from work, and happened to tune in to the Gary Patterson Show on ESPN just as a caller asked the question - "What do you think will happen if TCU wins out, and has that one loss to SMU on its record?" Gary's response was "First of all, I don't think anyone outside the Metroplex even knows who SMU is, so I don't think it will matter." He then went on to talk about how tough their remaining schedule was, etc...
I thought it was interesting that he would make such a comment. Granted, SMU has not been anywhere near as successful as TCU over the last few years, but SMU's history is one the best in college football. He just needs to accept the fact that SMU (regardless of whether or not anyone outside the Metroplex knows who we are) kicked their butts, and once again, they may end the season with only one loss to shatter their BCS dreams.
Re: Gary Patterson on ESPN Radio Last Night
And I am positive that no one outside of Fort Worth knows who the hell Patterson is...
I caught a little bit of that last night as well, but didn't hear that part. What is funny is the "audience." There are clearly about two dozen people there and two thirds were there to have dinner and could have cared less.
We need to make this quote into a sign and hang in the locker room 2 years from now. Or maybe we should hang it up now, right above the Iron Skillet.
Gary's response was "First of all, I don't think anyone outside the Metroplex even knows who SMU is, so I don't think it will matter." Just send 'da money.
Anybody that pulls his pants up to his nipples should not be taken too seriously. Actually Gary it was national news when we kicked your arse at Ford. You didn't even have a offensive touchdown. I hope you get in a bowl with a real team like Texas Tech and get another 77 points laid on you.
I have it on good authority that if you poke GP in the general vicinity of his navel, he'll involuntarily exclaim "hoo-HOO!" Or so I've heard.
No kidding. I remember talking with Mike Cavan before the final game of the year, against then-winless TCU, and he talked up TCU like it was the University of Texas. He talked about how that team was "much better than its record" and a "very dangerous team." Then, of course, TCU beat us. After the game, he was full of "told you so" comments. If TCU goes 10-1 and is lobbying for a BCS bid, you'd think Patterson would be touting SMU as the scariest unknown team in the country, a power on the rise, a dangerous team full of young, unknown studs. Writing us off as insignificant merely makes TCU's loss to us look even worse. Likewise, as hard as it is for me to ever root for TCU .... in anything, I have to hope they win out, because it makes our win over them look better.
TCU has been waging public relations war against SMU for several years now. While dumb ole oblivious SMU has thought we were "partners" or friends. They do many subtle and not so subtle things over there in FW. Patterson's quote says alot. If you're tempted to call me paranoid, I'm not, just not naive. SMU has to fight fire with fire wherever and whenever possible. We ain't friends and we ain't partners anymore.
his comment was ridiculous, its not an excuse for you to recite our record Deep Purple. Army and Navy havent won much lately, but everyone around the country knows who they are. All football fans, media and certainly poll voters and bowl people know who SMU is for many reasons good and bad. Screw Fat Patterson. The truth is his sweaty fat little self feels threatened by Bennett in recruiting and will take jabs wherever he can.
Everybody in the nation heard of us that night since ESPN was flashing the score every 15 minutes after the win. Maybe the reason TCU lost was because of the attitude of the coach not taking SMU seriously carried over to his team. Sweaty will surely regret losing to a nobody for the rest of the season.
Ponysnob, last year doesn't matter much now does it. Last year they were the nobody with their awesome 6-5 season and no bowl bid. But people did notice them when they gave up 70 something to Tech.
I'm not saying recruiting appears to be going well at the moment and you know thats not what I'm saying counselor. But Bennett is a formidable recruiter and has been a threat to Patterson. Bennetts first two classes are as relevant or more than the current in progress class. I guarantee you the last thing Patterson wants to see is Bennett get some on the field momentum and take that out on the recruiting trail. Bennett is a savvy recruiter and you know he is knocking on the same doors as Patterson trying to steal a few TCU leans.
