Did the Horns just not want to play SMU?

Postby MrMustang1965 » Fri Oct 14, 2005 10:18 pm

Wonder if the Horns asked SMU to play before dropping down to the Div. 1-AA level? This game will be played two weeks after the SMU v Sam Houston State game in Dallas (Oct. 16).

AUSTIN – Texas wanted to schedule a team in 2006 that would not require a return date, so after talking to nearly every school in the Sun Belt, Mid-American, Conference USA and Western Athletic conferences, the Longhorns scheduled Division I-AA Sam Houston State for Sept. 30.

Coach Mack Brown said UT talked to "50 schools" before settling on Sam Houston State.

"We would not play a Division I-AA team in the future," Brown said. "That's not who we are. But the approval of a 12th game left us little time to find an opponent that met our criteria."

I bet they would have played SMU, if not for the "1 home game only" stipulation that they explained. What a whiner, Mack Brown could have gotten ANY team if he would have guaranteed a return trip in the future, but he went cheap and then threw his hands up like "oh well, guess no one will play us here..." Yeah, because you won't play them at their stadium.

As bad as some things have been under Copeland, I've always liked our ability to schedule fairly with our OOC opponents. Granted, I'd prefer not to open a season with TCU, Texas Tech, and Ok State, but at least we got them to come here in return. Within this year and the two previous seasons, we've played every SWC school except UT and Arkansas, and all of those were signed as "home for home" agreements, except ATM which was 2 for 1.

Next year is looking weak for our schedule, but I think that's Bennett more than Copeland. He's been complaining since he got here that the schedule is too tough, while Copeland argued that we need butts in seats so we needed to play regional big-name teams. I'm torn I guess, but as fun as it was to play a close home opener against Texas Tech, it'd also be nice to be favored in our first 3 games, and hopefully start out 3-0.

Arkansas is looking pretty crappy again, can we schedule them soon before they get a real coach?

once again the truth surfaces-these schools don't play 3 blind mice for the easy victories but because they want an extra game at home. 83,000 * about $50+ for each ticketholder. UT has to hold some tickets back not to sell-out in the PREASEASON. That will never work at SMU because we will be lucky to get 10,000-12,000 instead of 27,000-32,000 for playing a traditional rival. I do think UT is making a mistake though because who knows it could cost them a chance at the BCS Championship Game,

Hey Stallion, if offered, shouldn't SMU take a game against UT for the exposure and money even if it's a one game series down there?

Is the exposure really that good if we went to Austin and got humiliated like we did against A$M this year?

The thing next year, we still open the season againist Tech..Out in Lubbock.

Then we come back to the metroplex for North Texas in Denton, then Arkansas State and Sam Houston State at home.

We better be ATLEAST 3-1.

What a whiner

 Where in any of that did he whine?

Yeah, Texas fans are pretty embarrased and upset about this. Of course we fans would rather play SMU than Sam Houston State. It's all politics and money, though. I doubt many people will get up for this game. Oh well.

SMU should continue taking games against TTech & Baylor because they will give us home/home series, but we should also take the opportunity to play Texa$ or A$M even if it means goig to their place. The paycheck is nice and it tells the coaches how far we still have to go to compete "at the highest level", which we are theoretically doing at I-A.

Continuing the TCU series, with one of our only TRUE rivals, is a given and I will always believe UNT would be a good series to rotate with Baylor. Play our former SWC mates and our neighbor UNT as often as we can. It's what most people want to see.

today the horns could have a 30k homefield advantage if they did a home and home.
