Run the D*mn Ball!

Postby BrianTinBigD » Sat Oct 15, 2005 3:37 pm

We are averaging over 7 yards a carry and still we keep trying to pass the ball all over the place. Throw in 2 tight ends. Let Massey block and Martin will gain at least 250 yards today. Also, isn't Romo more of a running QB. Let's stress that skill as well.

Demyron is running great, but don't forget, Bear Bryant used to say for every time a RB fumbles, take 40 yds off his total for the day. So far, minus 80 for Demyron. His 2nd fumble may have cost us a td. Oh well, doesn't matter. Feed him! He's running all over these rubes.

At one point, according to gametracker Martin had 19 carries for eightysomething yards. With time winding down and when we regained the ball deep in our own territory, why the h#ll don't we run the d@mn run...gash the defense time and again.

I know such a strategy works...saw it used against us vs. Baylor.

I wonder if Tulane's "home" game in Ruston drew more fans than ours.

McKinney is just the perfect protype FB-we got to show that look more. BTW in HS I think McKinney was an excellent pass receiver out of the backfield.

Doesn't that make too much sense, though, Stallion? My guess is somewhere someone is saying we need to run the slice play more often.

That's truly pathetic, isn't it?

LaTech is known for small crowds anyway. Ruston is a small town. There's plenty of other stuff to do in Shreveport. Tulane has a small student body, most of which is scattered everywhere. LaTech's student body is almost as apathetic as SMU's. And what do you know...the school without a home outdraws SMU. Sad.

My whole problem is that Martin had 105 yards in the first half. After we tie the game he gets to run the ball twice and we throw the ball all over the place. Who in the hell is calling these games? Also, we get hammered on the time of possession again by 5 minutes.

SMU loves to use 2 low percentage plays that push us into 3rd and 10 every time. Why didn't Burns run on 1st and 2nd down. We are never in a position where we have 2nd and 2 or 3.

Brian you are absolutely right. SMU should have run the ball down their throats. Regardless of the fact that DM had 2 fumbles (and btw Romo had 4 ints) he was moving the ball at will. SMU coaches lost this game with their usual bizzare play calling. We got very lucky at UAB. TT we are not.

The coachng staff needs to go and so does everyone else connected with the SMU football team--AD especially for selecting Cavan and Bennett. Stop the madness. Get some new blood in here.

Two comments on this:

1) Against UAB, we were very effective running the ball, especially in short yardage, when we lined up in a two TE set, let Urbanus blow people out and run behind him, DJ, and Chase. Today, the few times we ran in a 2 TE set, we ran two playaction passes, a handful of QB sneaks, and the rest of the runs were to the right, which got blown up against UAB. I realize ECU may have prepared for the run left behind Urbanus (and we DID sub Urbanus back in whenever we went to that set), but we should have tried that direction at least once.

2) One of the biggest runs of the day was when we lined up Massey and Martin in the backfield and ran left with Massey as a lead blocker. We never ran it again.

3) We had several drives in the first half that made it to midfield by running the ball. Then, we pass on first down, incomplete, and have to pass the next two downs. Just keep running the ball! Sometimes an OC can try to be too clever, trying to mix things up. if you have a strength in a particular game, use it, wait for the other team to react, then change things up. We never force the other team to react.
