Yes they do. If we were ever in that division we best never get good. Maybe an occasional upset.

Don't read more into this than what it is. SMU finally getting its sh*t in order. P5 is so far away and so far down the road its not even worth discussing.

Of course it has to be. The university and the athletic department know the only sustainable model for SMU is entrance to a P5 conference. We have the proper pieces to start winning in both basketball and football for the first time since the Death Penalty. We can only watch and hope that this will yield positive results. If, and this is a huge if, we can get both programs consistently performing at a Top 25 level then I could see SMU being an attractive expansion candidate. Let's hope that it happens.

Fact of the matter is, I have heard numerous times from various SEC people - they want more of Texas. They'd love an SMU type of school that would get them into Dallas every other year while also providing Vandy type of competitiveness (i.e. conference win, but still a tougher than OoC games). We would have to play our cards perfectly for years to make something like this a possibility. If we were to have a handful of years of true success in both basketball and football, forget the Big XII, the SEC wants to be in north Texas.

This would not be happening without a realistic path to P5. Who is it?

Could it be Big12, which seems unlikely but TCU added nothing when they were added. Perhaps a defensive move to keep someone out?

Perhaps the SEC wants into Dallas to leverage A&M and give a Vanderbilt-style breather for the west teams? There WAS the SEC/SMU meeting in the last round that generated the infamous SMU to SEC tweet.

Maybe PAC ACC or BIG10 wants in to Texas?

well, as much as it pains me to say it, TCU added football and baseball equity to the Big 12 brand...and a champion for the '14 football season, and a potential place in the inaugural College Football playoff. We should hope to bring as much to our CURRENT conference, regardless of the sport.

We'd also need to form a baseball team. I'm not certain but I'm pretty sure that the SEC requires football, basketball, and baseball on the men's side.

With SEC money, baseball and women's softball to satisfy Title IX, is not a problem.
Just send 'da money.

Had we hired Nick Saban, I could see this talk being more than pure fantasy. As it is, in the really real world, we hired an up and comer OC. I hope he reaches Saban success and all at SMU. If so, then we might talk about conference upgrade.

It just feels a whole lot like "you fit our needs, but we can't add you if you are garbage. Here is how to get your act together"
"I think Couchem is right."
