This would not be happening without a realistic path to P5. Who is it?

Could it be Big12, which seems unlikely but TCU added nothing when they were added. Perhaps a defensive move to keep someone out?

Perhaps the SEC wants into Dallas to leverage A&M and give a Vanderbilt-style breather for the west teams? There WAS the SEC/SMU meeting in the last round that generated the infamous SMU to SEC tweet.

Maybe PAC ACC or BIG10 wants in to Texas?

well, as much as it pains me to say it, TCU added football and baseball equity to the Big 12 brand...and a champion for the '14 football season, and a potential place in the inaugural College Football playoff. We should hope to bring as much to our CURRENT conference, regardless of the sport.

TCU is helping our cause. Private school in big city with the ability to recruit because they are in a P5 conference.

If we could tell our recruits that they would be playing in the P12/B12/SEC, how much better would they be?

If we were to have a handful of years of true success in both basketball and football, forget the Big XII, the SEC wants to be in north Texas.

I hate to break it to you guys (especially in my first post on here), but SMU will never be invited to the SEC. As someone who grew up in SEC country (Baton Rouge) before moving to Dallas to go to SMU, I read and hear plenty about the SEC and SEC West. Also, Clay Travis and his website (Outkick the Coverage), have covered this topic extensively. Conference expansion is all about $$$, and for the SEC that means only inviting schools that offer new media markets. And A&M already delivered the Texas market. While I'm sure there are SEC teams that would appreciate adding a cupcake team to their schedules, adding SMU makes no business sense.

The two places that make the most sense for the SEC to expand (both geographically and economically) would be Virginia (with Virginia Tech and the Northern VA/DC market) and North Carolina (with NC State/Charlotte market, which seems like an odd choice, but Duke and UNC would never break up their rivalry or take the reputation hit of going to a less prestigious academic conference like the SEC). OU would make sense, but not sure that the SEC is as interested in a package deal involving little-brother Oklahoma State. There are other schools that make more sense from a geographic/talent level/traditional rivalry standpoint (e.g. Clemson, Georgia Tech, Florida State), but their in-state rivals that are already in the SEC (South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, respectively), would never allow that vote to pass. And I'm guessing A&M would do the same thing to prevent SMU (or UT or any other Texas college) from cutting into their SEC marketing monopoly over the state and recruiting.

So while I really, really hope that SMU can somehow find a way to sneak into a P5 conference before it's too late, I think the Big 12 is the best shot we've got.

conference talk gives me tired head. let's just focus on turning the program into anything besides a flaming heap of dog sh*t first.

In my life's experience (albeit its only been 26 years!), if you're not keeping your eye on the prize at all times, you'll derail for sure.

We're not talking about an SEC invite in a year, but a P5 invite of some sort after 10 years of success? That is possible. I don't see the P5 inviting many schools - after a decade they should be stable and set.

I agree that if someone could predict the future and tell you with certainty that we will not be in a p5 conference (or the equivalent) in 10-20 years, we should just close the door on the football program today. I'm just saying let's wait until we maybe win a conference championship in a 2nd tier conference before we look too ridiculous by talking about the value we bring to the sec.

Too hard, it's much easier to pick out our new conference and tell them we'll start caring about football after we get in.

It's fun to speculate, but realistically it's Big 12 or backfill for ACC teams going to the SEC.

We are such an ACC school anyway.

While Aggie significantly expanded their exposure in Texas, the DFW media market dwarfs the markets you pointed to. If they really want to move "all in" into Texas, alternating Aggie games with a "Dallas" team would give them a game in Texas every week. In addition to garnering attention from the DMN's of the world, SMU would help them offer counter programing options by the B12.

Examples: SMU plays Arkansas in JerryWorld every Thanksgiving weekend instead of Tech/Baylor. S

Yep and we actually got an invite to a power conference a few years later. Of course it stopped being a power conference almost immediately after we got there. Still counts though, right?

A and M = Houston
SMU = Dallas (Now hopefully)

Long way off. But got to start positioning now.
