How frustrating is this

Postby RGV Pony » Sat Oct 15, 2005 8:55 pm

...to watch the Vandy home game on ESPN2 right now with a good atmosphere, big band, and a lot of fans besides just the away team's fans. And earlier in the day, how about Northwestern.

Someday perhaps I'll wise up and quit thinking that scenes like these are what SMU is capable of and should have.

It would be interesting to see a time line with 9 or 10 quantitative watermarks beginning in 1980 progressing until now comparing SMU, NW'ern, and Vanderbilt. Then again I might not want to see the results of such a study.

Oh, and yes I know both of those schools are in superconferences etc. etc. etc. This post isn't intended to mean all such things are possible in the CUSA vs. Big10(11) and the SEC.

It's called a monopoly called BCS started by ABC TV.

Maybe a boycott of ABC TV, their sports shows, news, and everything else televised by ABC by everybody affiliated with non-bcs schools would wake ABC, and the ncaa up. Maybe a MONOPOLY lawsuit by the non-bcs schools would do it.

We're sheep (non-bcs schools), I'm dreaming I live to see the bcs go away.

PlanoStang,
Are you saying Vanderbilt is having a great year b/c of ABC TV?

Yup, I"M VERY SURE being a member of an ABC bcs conference (SEC)
helps MEGA times (X) with recruiting. See Baylor's resurgence this
year.

Non bcs conference teams are regulated to trying for the top of ncaa div
1aa players.

VERY UNFAIR, and mega times MORE unfair an advantage that SMU
gained by paying a few players in the early 80s.

I agree. SMU is at a disadvantage compared to Vandy when it comes to SEC vs. CUSA. But I don't think we have to be in a BCS conference in order to put fans in the stands and have a great atmosphere like RGV Pony described. All we have to do is win!

we just lost to ECU at home. Didn't they also win ZERO games 2 years ago. This is a BAD loss that can't be just explained away because of the mean ole BCS. This was a turning point that never arrived-this was a major lost opportunity to turn this program in the right direction. Meanwhile while you guys cry about how the BCS is destroying the SMU program Tcu is on its way to another championship. Now when you're through making excuses for SMU then go look at TCU's Model and SMU's Model and you might actually learn something.

no doubt about it...this was a game SMU HAD TO WIN to get any positive momentum going and to convince students, alumni, the media, casual foootball fans in the DFW area and perhaps most importantly, potential recruits...that SMU is turning the corner with this program.

Folks: our attendance has suc*ked for years and I don't want to hear how winning will change all of that. If we had a team that was dominating CUSA and winning championships EVERY year, we might average somewhere in the high 20's but you will never convince me we would sell out Ford every week.

The CSTV announcers hit the nail on the head when they said something to the effect that: "if this game was in Greenville (NC), it would be very exciting and the crowd would be electric". It really was an entertaining game right down to the end. Playing for SMU has to be tough for the guys on this team and if anyone doesn't understand why, all they need to do is show up to a game to find out.
