They could count him backwards to 2014 class (if there were spots remaining under 25) or forward to 2015. Signing date last year was such a cluster.... (guys coming and going) I'm not sure we stand on numbers from the last class

Would Morris really pass on a kid this talented just because he won't be able to compete for the job next year?

Don't you think we have a ton of holes to fill across the roster instead of taking 3 QBs? That is my thought...

No I think the biggest and most important hole is at QB. I'd like to reshuffle the entire jury pool at QB-start over. Hopefully most of our QBs realize they don't fit or agree to move to a new position. If we got 3 QBs we could move non-QBs Davis and Colbert to Receiver

My thought is that we have a ton of holes to fill across the roster and QB(the most important position on the team) takes precedence. Of course opinions on this subject will vary based on whether you believe the QBs on the roster fit Morris' style. I don't think any of them do so I want three but Morris might disagree (he might believe in Davis as much as you do).

Honest question here: Was Davis being recruited as a QB or a WR when Morris offered him out of High School?

There wasn't a Bible in the room when he signed his Letter of Intent. Quite frankly there were plenty of questions about Davis at QB even in high school. You sign a guy like that because he's a fantastic athlete that you can use at any number of positions. Most Texas High schools put their best athlete at QB and more QBs are moved to other positions than any other position. He left because they wanted to do just that. If he wants to play in the NFL and SMU finds some other alternatives he's be wise to volunteer to move

I'm just wondering if, at any point, Morris thought this kid could hack it as a QB in his system.

Unless we're bringing in a JUCO QB, I can see Smith as a 1 season caretaker, while more pieces are added. But that only works if Morris thinks he can hold it down.

He wanted to stay at QB so he transferred from A&M, who recruited him as a QB. Morris recruited him as a QB and I am betting he would refuse a move again because he wants to see how he plays in the system.

Also, keep in mind that we need QBs to run the offense in the Spring, so he and Colbert probably won't be moved before then. Which will limit their transition time and effectiveness in the Fall. So I don't think Davis will ever be moved from QB. And that is why I think we only get 2 QBs in this class, not three.

If Davis wants a long-term future in football, he'll realize he needs to change positions. He is not a quarterback, unless we're running the ball on 90% of plays. If he's playing quarterback for us next spring, it's simply because we have no better options, which I doubt will be the case.

Every kid is going to look at Johnny Manziel, who was a great athlete and wanted to play QB while most schools wanted him as a DB, and say "Well, he did it, why not me?"
Hope our kids are smart enough to see the writing on the wall when it's time for a position change.

Look at it from the other perspective. Let's say Cassell and Burcham transfer out. We need 3 qBs in the spring. That will be Davis, Colbert, and Severt. We get two in the fall to compete. if you want to move 1 guy to WR (I need 4 QBs), it will be Colbert so that he has time to learn a new position. And Davis is such a leader that you want him to lead the team from the QB position until someone takes his job.

You add on top of that that Davis has refused to move in the past, and I think the thought of him moving to WR is a pipe dream. And personally, I think he will do just fine running the Morris offense. He can make the throws in that offense and he can run the ball. No reason to move him. It's not like he can't throw a lick or doesn't have an arm. He can't go through reads. Don't have to in this offense.

Agree. Let him compete for the job. He will know if he can make it from who HCCM brings in and how he does in the spring.

Here is an article from the AAC Blog discussing Matt Davis and Chad Morris. Not sure I agree, but this guy thinks Davis would work in the offense.
