I'm sure you're right Ponyte, my memory is hazy and you were there. Did we run the opening KO back for a TD in the opening game? I was there, just not sure after all this passage of tie.
Long live Inez Perez!

Yes, DK Perry ran it back. And we also blocked an extra point (David Hill). Great start that year. 2-0 until we ran into Alabama and Paul Bryant.

Top Twenty wrote:Totally disagree. He created a buzz from the start, and it spread through the faithful. He did beat TCU in the opener, and, later in the year, almost knocked off Texas in Austin (playing for the win, he passed up a late tie and failed on a two point play after a motion penalty). You could see it coming from Day One.

So we're going to beat Baylor next year? Awesome.

I got on the plane anyway.

Even though we got our heads handed to us, it was a great experience.

Clements was the first Republican Governor of Texas in '78 since Reconstruction and the damn Yankees...

He was a doucher. He said that it was our "moral obligation" to continue to make illegal payments to athletes. He is probably the only person to do more to harm to SMU than Ken Pye.

I remember a big picture of Clements in the Morning News announcing the SMU "death penalty from the steps of the state capitol. Never did like the guy.

Not to split hairs, but I do remember DK Perry running back the opening kickoff in '78 back for a TD against TCU to start the season. Fall of my freshman year. Then the Ponies went on the road for three games. Beating Florida, a tie with Ohio State and then lost to Michigan. Ponyte, did DK run one back against TCU in 76 as well? Great memories.

I actually thought it was Dallas City Councilman Tennell Atkins but I couldn't find a boxscore to check it

My memory of the TCU game in 76: I think Arthur Whittington had something like three touchdowns. That was Ricky Wesson's senor year. Loved Wesson's last game as a senior when SMU beat Arkansas in the 76 finale.

Perry definitely returned a Kickoff for TD against TCU in 1978 according to SMU Factbook. Whittington was our Top KO Returner in 1976-but again I couldn't find a boxscore

We didn't play Michigan in 1978. We played

Florida W in Gainesville 35-25
Ohio St in Columbus (I was there) T 35-35
Penn St. L in Happy Valley 26-21

EastStang wrote:Right after Meyer was hired, I had the honor of interviewing him for the Daily Campus. I met him in his office and he was literally between recruiting trips (in his first week). He was back from Houston and headed to Odessa. He was changing clothes and told me he only had a short time since he only had time to sh--, shower and shave. The guy was a mover and shaker and a real personality. Compared to his predecessor, he was a real breath of fresh air.

Yup, he was. I liked the fire he showed on his coach's weekly TV show.

Too bad he ended up with $100 bills hanging out his back pocket :!:
