Re: Those Who Were Around - Does this feel like Ron MeyerStallion you are right. Brain freeze. We darn near beat Penn State as well. Eddie Garcia (later of the Packers for a year or so) missed a long field goal (not by much) at the end of the Ohio State game.

Re: Those Who Were Around - Does this feel like Ron MeyerThe missed field goal at Ohio State hit the upright and bounced off. We beat Florida that year at the swamp....
About 25 feet from the Hillcrest track... With the boots so tall and the writing on the wall...

Those Who Were Around - Does this feel like Ron Meyer
That was the start of Mustang Mania. I was a high school sophomore and attended the game. It was a big crowd at the Cotton Bowl and I think Potts and Thomas had worked a tie in with 7-11/ Jerry Kids. I think. Also, Ron Meyer could sell ice to an Eskimo. GO MUSTANGS!
Re: Those Who Were Around - Does this feel like Ron MeyerRon was, and is, a Mustang forever. Have no idea what Stallion is thinking. Glad to visit with him at our home games each year.
Smu plays UNLV in Vegas. Ron and Tark are great buds. RM takes 20 of us into the Rebel Club pre game - is there in person 1.5 hrs before kickoff - and personally introduces us all to his buds and Tark, telling all how much he loves SMU. I love Ron Meyer. Ah, the good old days. Friday happy hours with the bag men of the old SWC at Gershwins (Walnut Hill & Greenville).

No it missed by several feet. I was in that end zone and had a good view of it "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

Re: Those Who Were Around - Does this feel like Ron MeyerI remember the Alabama game. We played pretty well at first and Bryant because so angry he pulled his first string and inserted subs to embarrass the first string. They got the message and were crushing us by halftime. I asked Ron Meyer if the story was true that he REALLY told the team at halftime (trailing by probably 56 points) "Guys, we got them where we want them." and he laughed and didn't reply. So tell me Ponyte, DID he say that?
Long live Inez Perez!
Re: Those Who Were Around - Does this feel like Ron Meyer
What because I called him slick and polished and he was under immediate suspicion almost immediately? I'm just telling the truth. The Players and Coaches (see Endicott regarding Dickerson) admit all kinds of unrevealed violations in Pony Excess that never made it into an NCAA Report. Everybody knows and Bishop Report found that under Meyer the slush fund was energized. Come on Ron Meyer may have been a great guy-I loved him-but you are straining credibility to deny that the NCAA had very good reasons for suspicions of his program almost immediately. Re: Those Who Were Around - Does this feel like Ron MeyerIt's not that SMU was cheating...that is an upside down way of looking at it. Nobody was "cheating"...everybody was simply ignoring a toothless NCAA...in their own way. Everybody. Until 1985.
The game was to not draw too much attention...or try to knock off the guys on top. These were the cardinal sins that Meyer (SMU) committed. It's a different deal today. Everybody is still "ignoring" the NCAA in their own way. But the money moving around makes the 1980's look like friggin Dollar Store. And we don't pretend we are virgins anymore. Forget $100 handshakes...nobody cares about $100k briefcases. ps- Bill Clements made a poor ethical decision late into our scandal...but he made a solid business decision given our situation that gave us a slight chance of survival. If you disagree...put on his shoes and tell me what you would have done and what you think the outcome would have been. __________________________________________________

BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.
Re: Those Who Were Around - Does this feel like Ron MeyerEveryone criticized the decision to keep paying but I don't understand the alternative. If we stopped and 15 cut off players ran to WFAA to sell their story wouldn't that be guaranteed DP?

Re: Those Who Were Around - Does this feel like Ron MeyerSorry if someone already mentioned it but what is HCRM doing these days?
SMU-12 NCAA appearances, 1 Final Four
2014-15 & 2016-17 AAC Men's Basketball Champs
Re: Those Who Were Around - Does this feel like Ron Meyer
I don't remember those exact words. He did try to encourage us. I do remember Bill Muir, OL coach, putting his fist through a portable chalk board. Very vivd memories of that cause I was literally 3 feet away from his fist. After Muir, I was the closes one to the that action. Scared me into believing. Meyer and the coaching staff were not pleased with our second half effort. It seems some players started to 'quit' and Meyer wanted to nip that in the bud. All in all an interesting trip.
